From the archives: it feels like at the start of each September, we experience the highest humidity levels of the year, the hottest days of the year, and sometimes remnants of cyclones either send waves higher than usual, or late-summer rain. I’ve debated on even posting this photo, but here is what literally is the “Calm Before The Storm” as this guard at Cardiff Tower 11 looks on to surfers catching the day’s swell. In a matter of hours, rain would impact this area, quite rare in SoCal for this time of any year. #lifeguards #didyougettheshotbro #beachrescue #summer2025

From the archives: as many of you know, we lost several key surf breaks to erosion caused by repeated swells from tropical cyclones, so here is Tower 36 at Carlsbad State Beach a year before all of these swells hit #lifeguards #didyougettheshotbro #beachsafety #throwback

LIFEGUARDS, Now synonymous with FIRST RESPONDER…. Senate Concurrent Resolution 192 has been adopted by both houses of the California Legislature. SCR 192 is the measure formally recognizing California’s professional open water lifeguards as first responders, in acknowledgment of our essential role in emergency response, public safety, and drowning prevention. I cannot believe this effort began late May, and that SCR 192 is now being adopted today, August 19 (<3 months later!!)!! I would be doing this summer a disservice if I did not name how serendipitous it has been. The swell delivered conditions that placed this profession in front of the public in a divinely timed way, and the volume of coverage and discourse on lifeguarding these past three months has been momentous for this effort. We are especially grateful for the national conversation that followed the recording of Ryder’s rescue. Ryder, thank you for advocating on behalf of this community on a national stage, and for your composure and your bravery. It was a well-executed rescue, though not an anomaly, our vocation. Welcome to the lifeguard renaissance. Last post like this for a while, thank you for the overwhelming amount of love and support for SCR 192. As lifeguards, we are grateful to serve the public and here for the betterment and safety of the public. To all of the people involved who helped (see comments): THANK YOU, this would not have been possible without each and every one of you. Lifeguards are now first responders, and it has been a privilege advocating alongside each and every one of you — this is only the beginning of the lifeguard renaissance. With immense love and gratitude, Gisele Halualani #lifeguard #firstresponder #SCR192

SCR 192 HAS BEEN ADOPTED BY THE FIRST CHAMBER, THE SENATE!! SCR192, the resolution recognizing California’s professional open water lifeguards as first responders cleared the Senate, and it now moves to the Assembly. So our work is not done quite yet! Thank you from the bottom of my heart to Senator Henry Stern for authoring this resolution and carrying it this far. And a huge thank you to Senators Blakespear and Gonzalez for their co-authorship, and to Senators Strickland and Laird additionally for their support and for standing with the lifeguard community on this. Please contact your Assemblymember and ask them to vote YES on SCR 192. This whole campaign has been lifeguards across the entire state coming together, and every call, every email, every share has gotten us here. Let’s bring it home. With immense love and gratitude,

I am beyond stoked and elated to say that we have reason to believe SCR 192, the resolution formally recognizing California’s professional open water lifeguards as first responders, could reach a vote in the coming week. While, this is extremely exciting, it also is indicative of our narrow window to shape the outcome. I am imploring all of you to please call and leave voicemails for your representatives this weekend with the goal of overwhelming the voicemail inboxes come Monday. Have your friends and family call as well!! Our goal this weekend is to saturate every channel available to these offices, their phone lines, their voicemail, and their inboxes, by Monday. Once more, I want California’s legislators to see the overwhelming support and testimony of the lifeguard community.  You can find scripts, templates to madlib, and more information at our website (link in bio). Additionally, if you can gather a letter of endorsement, from yourself, your family, your community, a local organization, send it to me at ghalualani@berkeley.edu and I will submit it on everyone’s behalf. You do not have to be a lifeguard to do a single one of these things. Family, friends, beach patrons, quite literally anyone who loves our coast can step in here. And a reminder of what this actually is: SCR 192 does not change statute, pay, benefits, or any existing agreement. All it does is align the formal description of our role with the work open water lifeguards already perform every single day. We are here to serve the public, and for the betterment of the public. We are the first ones on scene, and we ask only that the record reflect the work we already do. To the public, and to the entire lifeguarding community, thank you. For the love, for the support, for standing beside us through all of this. It means more than I could ever put into words. We are so close!!! With immense love and gratitude, Gisele Halualani #ForgottenFirstResponder #SCR192 #LifeguardsAsFirstResponders #CaliforniaLifeguards #FirstResponders

What an unforgettable week at the United States Lifeguard Association Nationals here in Fort Lauderdale. 🌊🇺🇸 I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to compete alongside some of the best lifeguards in the country. Thank you to my sponsors, @watermenbrand , for your continued support, and a huge thank you to my @calstatesurfracing team. I’m proud to represent such an amazing group of people. This trip challenged me, pushed me, and reminded me why I love this sport. I left it all out there, gave it everything I had, and couldn’t be prouder. Already looking forward to next year. #GoState #USLANationals #Waterman #Lifeguard #FortLauderdale
