I had such a great time in LA yesterday.
We went to the @thebroadmuseum and saw Yoko Ono’s “Music of the Mind” exhibition. This was such an incredible experience-so glad I made it before it closed. And I was even able to get a few new ideas for my Artivism class.
Then, we went to the @lucasmuseum which had lots of great works including several works by Crawford alumni @kadirnelson -so happy to see his work in person!

We had an incredible music and storytelling assembly today “Stories of the Americas” with the one & only Macedonio Arteaga Jr.
My Artivism students really enjoyed this event and some even walked away with great prizes for participating.

This was the second group of Artivism students that created native San Diego animal collages using plastic waste collected from around the campus.
The lesson is inspired by the amazing work of Dr. Katharine Owens who researches the impact of plastic on sea animals and creates life-sized collages of the animals out of plastic waste with the help of local communities.
After teaching this last year, I realized her work fits perfectly into the 5 steps of the Critical Practice Model the students use for their Youth Participatory Action Research projects: Identifying a Problem, Researching the Issue, Developing a Plan of Action, implementing the Plan of Action, and Reflecting.
I was so fortunate to see her present last year with my fellow National Geographic Grosvenor 2024 Fellows @natgeoeducation .

Problem Trees: I tried out this lesson in my Artivism class that learned during my University of California Irvine History Project training. The students identify a problem in the world they care about and then think through the causes and effects of the issue.
I was really impressed with the variety of topics they selected.
In the original version, the roots of the tree are the causes but I switched it to worms since we do a lesson on vermicompost next.

Throwback to our 2nd Annual APIDA Youth Summit held at @sdcityaanhpi on Wednesday, April 22nd!

Huge shout-out to students from Morse High School, Crawford High School, Mira Mesa High School, San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts, Patrick Henry High School, Bell Middle School, and Challenger Middle School for joining us on this full-day event to learn more about non-STEM career pathways and cultural wealth workshops, especially from students on the APIDA Student Board, who shared their research projects on the Model Minority Myth and Islamophobia & Citizenship.

While most classes are winding down for the end of the school year, my Artivism class is in full swing completing their YPAR (Youth Participatory Action Research) projects and completing their CA Civic Seal of Engagement applications.
Should I have picked one project for the class instead of letting students develop 6 separate projects? Yes, definitely, maybe. But we’re committed to making it to the finish line!
Student projects include a research publication, salad bar vermicompost bin, recycling waste awareness program, student health awareness campaign, teacher feedback student committee, and a library nook!
Special thanks to all the individuals and organizations that supported the development of these projects through interviews, inspiration, materials, funding, field trips and more.
And a BIG THANKS to my awesome student teacher Helen that did so, so much support these students and me. I’m so looking forward to seeing the incredible impact she will have on so many young people as her teaching career begins.

Time for a throwback! Today, we're spotlighting and congratulating Mira Mesa High School for hosting a successful Pilipino Cultural Night (PCN) hosted last month on April 9th! 🇵🇭✨️

Here, students, teachers, and faculty came together to celebrate festivals across the Philippines, organized by the Filipino Language class. Over hundreds of community members from across San Diego County were in attendance! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
