Consider joining us for another wild one this Wednesday, August 5th at 8pm - HOUSE (Obayashi Nobuhiko, 1977) will screen at our usual spot @gemini.wine.bar with our usual accruements @seapriestselections ! House is a hypnotic combination of a major studio’s reaction to JAWS, Obayashi’s penchant for over the top effects, and the director’s 11-year-old daughter’s wild imagination. Erotic, startling, and cannibalistic, yet cute and melodramatic; the film resists interpretation through all of its twists and turns. Be sure to stick around after the screening savor another glass and process the film together. poster by @ditto_ as always!! P.S. we may present a brief program of Obayashi’s pre-House work to set the mood 🤫

On Monday, June 22nd we’ll be welcoming back Valley alumni @jakedotgov and @yeahkazzy for a @seapriestselections takeover! They’ve been out scouting the most delicious, inventive, intuitive Japanese wines to bring to our California shores. Their focus is on producers that aren’t necessarily trying to approximate Burgundy or Carneros, but instead are exploring what it means for a wine to be truly Japanese, while of course checking all the right Valley boxes for farm sourcing and production along the way. We love exploring sense of place in taste, trying to understand what can’t be experienced from anywhere else. You’ll just have to experience these wines for yourself! We’ll be grilling yakitori to accompany the excitement. Don’t miss it! Book your table on TOCK or walk in (if you dare) 🇯🇵

June is jumping at Vine Street. We added a bit more to the month so be sure to save and share this post! From a tasting with CJ McCollum of the Atlanta Hawks, paired with State Flour Pizza Company pizzas, to a Canary Islands wine tasting, Lo-Fi Oysters and jazz, Japanese wine, some of the best sparkling wine in California, and our continued partnership with Unfiltered Wine Festival featuring a winery close to our hearts, Bedrock Wine Co. And to sweeten the month, we are finishing with a waffle and coffee pop-up. Tickets for our events are available on our website or through the link in bio.

announcing the second meeting of the Leopard Temple ciné club! one week from today (5/13) we will reconvene to watch The Man Without a Map (燃え尽きた地図), the fourth and final film made collaboratively by director Teshigahara Hiroshi, novelist Abe Kobo, and composer Takemitsu Toru. continuing our loose program of late-1960s crime flicks, The Man Without a Map is an existentialist detective story chronicling the unnamed protagonist’s frustration as a he attempts to work through an unsolvable case of disappearance. Unlike the trio’s previous collaborations, this film conducts its philosophical investigation from well-trodden generic territory, creating very strong links between its concerns and those of more commercially oriented crime films like Tokyo Drifter. Such will be the big topic on all of our minds as we soak up Teshigahara’s amazing image composition, Katsu Shintaro’s charisma, and the sparse but haunting score by Takemitsu. we will (as always?) be featuring three new Japanese wines that were just imported by Sea Priest Selections. come through, have some great drinks, and make some new friends while watching a great movie! poster by @ditto_ who knocked it out of the park!!

Estrada refers to himself as “The Weatherman,” and for years he has meticulously recorded environmental changes, catastrophic weather events, and the natural phenomena impacting our daily lives. As Luis describes, “Far away in Mexico and Texas, there’s tornados. There’s earthquakes 365 days a year, and New York City is frozen. Everything happens, the weather changes real fast. The weather changes backwards.” His practice ranges from notational paintings and drawings to figurative ceramics and embroidered textiles, and also explores themes relating to personal history, celebrity WWE drama, and the passage of time. Estrada’s work has been collected and exhibited nationally, and was most recently featured in exhibitions at the Oakland Museum of California and Wave Pool Gallery in Cincinnati, OH. you are cordially invited to the first meeting of Leopard Temple ciné club, a curatorial project and forum for watching movies with friends. we will be watching Tokyo Drifter at Gemini Wine Bar on Wednesday April 8th!!! made at the tail end of Suzuki Seijun’s career at Nikkatsu Studio, Tokyo Drifter illustrates why the director would soon get fired for making “incomprehensible” films. expect a fun night of stylized violence, vibrant colors, and (if you’re really real) sing-along!! (lyric print outs will be provided with english translation) to celebrate the occasion I am happy to introduce three wines from Nagano and Yamagata, Japan imported by Sea Priest Selections. all three will be available for purchase at very honest prices! it will be a night to remember, the beginning of a new film-loving community <3 poster by @ditto_
