🚨 UPDATE: SJPD CONFIRMS OFFICER-INVOLVED SHOOTING NEAR 21ST & SANTA CLARA

SAN JOSE, CA — The San José Police Department has released NEW details regarding an officer-involved shooting that occurred on Monday, October 19, 2026, at approximately 2:54 AM near North 21st Street and East Santa Clara Street.

Officers conducted a traffic stop on an SUV for a vehicle code violation. The SUV was later confirmed to be an unreported stolen vehicle.

As officers exited their patrol vehicle, the driver allegedly drove toward one of the approaching officers, striking the officer with the SUV. A second officer discharged one round from his department-issued handgun.

The SUV, occupied by three males, immediately fled the scene. The injured officer sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

Using automated license plate reader cameras, officers later located the abandoned SUV near Lucretia Avenue and Tully Road.

Shortly afterward, officers received a report of an attempted carjacking involving three males in the 2300 block of Balme Drive. A rideshare driver reported seeing the individuals running aggressively toward his vehicle.

Following a search, officers located and arrested three juvenile males, ages 14, 14, and 16, who were allegedly hiding from police.

One 14-year-old was booked into Santa Clara County Juvenile Hall for assault with a deadly weapon and possession of a stolen vehicle. The other two juveniles were booked for obstructing a peace officer and possession of a stolen vehicle.

None of the juveniles were struck by gunfire.

This marks SJPD’s fourth officer-involved shooting of 2026. The officer who discharged his weapon has approximately one and a half years of experience with the department.

The incident remains under investigation by SJPD’s Homicide Unit and the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office, with additional administrative reviews underway.
