Your presence and support have meant so much! STR.DST.MRKT. exists because of the powerful lineage of Haitian and Caribbean placemakers, innovators, artists, and small businesses in Brooklyn, neighborhoods/lakous like Canarise in particular. Trailblazers in every sense, STR.DST.MRKT. embarked on the path they paved before us.

It’s been a joy to build moments of connection, art, and collective care with you. From @christopher.leveille beautifully crafted leather goods, to @nanmsantre vibrant paintings, Reiki education, and healing energy, to the a new music video and live performance by @rasinokan that channeled Haitian ancestral rhythms, memory, and spirit, we are honored by their contribution this project.

Endless thanks to Haiti Cultural Exchange for believing in us, for holding space with care, vision, and love for our people. And to our Lakou NOU co-residents @hat5hep5ut , @secondgenders, and @artofmere_ , thank you for showing up with heart, with brilliance, and in community with us. It was such an honor to share this experience with you.

As we wrap up our residency, we’re asking for your support by completing our Visitor Experience Survey (link in bio). Your reflections will be entered into the HCX Archives as a record of STR.DST.MRKT.’s intentions, reach, and community impact.

As you may have heard, Haiti Cultural Exchange will be closing its Crown Heights space soon. Their building was sold and their lease will not be renewed. While their physical doors may close, the legacy of their work remains active and unfolding. Follow @haiticulturalx for updates and info on two special fundraising events: Saturday, June 21, and Sunday, June 29.

With deep gratitude, thank you again for being part of the journey so far. Stay tuned 🇭🇹✨

STR.DST.MRKT. was presented as part of @tanialaure @haiticulturalx Lakou NOU artist residency project in Canarsie.

As part of the 2024 Lakou NOU residency with @haiticulturalx, artists Stephanie Pierre (@hat5hep5ut )Tania Balan-Gaubert (@tanialaure ), Zamí Germain (@secondgenders ), and Watson Mere (@artofmere_ )present a powerful culmination of projects exploring Haitian history, spirituality, queerness, creativity, and community.

🔎Stephanie’s Roots to Routes is an interactive digital map + exhibition uncovering Haitian social action movements rooted in East Flatbush — from the Day of Outrage march for Abner Louima to the Patrick Dorismond case and the 1990 FDA blood ban protest.

🔎Zamí’s Lakou Sekrè combines a beautifully handmade seashell installation + oral histories to preserve and uplift queer Haitian memory in Crown Heights.

🔎Tania’s STR.DST.MRKT (Star Dust Market) is a mobile gallery + concept shop showcasing Canarsie artists + makers, including music by @rasinokan, artwork by @nanmsantre & Tania, and leather bags & accessories by @christopher.leveille

🔎”Watson’s Untitled” written along with @jasmine.belis , is a powerful monologue exploring a young man’s evolving relationship with Haitian spirituality.

📍It’s not too late to catch it! The Lakou NOU Expo is still live until through May 10th at the FiveMyles Gallery in Brooklyn, NY.

This is your chance to experience the full impact of these incredible projects in person. And celebrate Haitian Heritage Month by reconnecting with untold stories that have shaped our community.

I am now in the practice of creating portals.

“Potomitan” (8ft x 7ft - acrylic on canvas) was created during my Lakou NOU artist residency with @haiticulturalx . Rooted in Haitian spirituality, this painting was also featured during my performance of “Untitled”, which was written by @jasmine.belis and presented at the @haiticulturalx Lakou NOU Culminating Expo Showcase on May 1st, 2025.

What does the piece say to you?

______________________________________________________

The Potomitan is the central pillar in a Vodou temple, serving as the axis that connects the earthly realm to the spirit world. It is through this sacred structure that the lwa (spirits) descend to commune with practitioners during ceremony.
