💪 Why Your Body Responds Differently to Exercise After 40

At 25, you could do endless cardio, eat a little less, and see results. But after 40, the game changes!

Hormonal shifts, declining muscle mass, recovery, sleep, and stress all influence how our bodies respond to exercise.

I’m 47 years old, living with Hashimoto’s, arthritis, and scoliosis. Trust me, I understand that our bodies don’t always cooperate! But I’ve never believed that age or a diagnosis should define what we’re capable of. I simply believe in finding ways to keep moving, getting stronger, and adapting when necessary.

Here’s what I wish more women understood:

💪 Strength training is essential for maintaining muscle and bone density.

🔥 More cardio isn’t always the answer.

🥩 Protein becomes increasingly important for preserving muscle.

😴 Recovery is just as important as your workout.

⚖️ The number on the scale doesn’t tell the whole story.

Your 40s aren’t the time to slow down. They’re the time to train smarter, lift heavier when appropriate, and invest in your future self!

I always say, a body in motion stays in motion! Consistency over perfection, every single time.

💕 Ladies over 40, what’s the biggest change you’ve noticed in your body, energy, or workouts?

📩 My DMs are always open! Whether you have questions about supplements, my pep stacks, my training splits, or you’re just trying to figure out where to start with fitness, I’d love to chat and share my personal experiences!

Want to come take one of my classes, train with me, or simply work out alongside me? Come join me @form_southlake @lifetime.westlake @secondsideyoga ! You don’t have to be in shape to get started. You just have to show up! 💪❤️

Hard is not a reason to quit. Uncomfortable is not a reason to stop. And fear is definitely not a reason to hold yourself back. 💪🔥

Growth doesn’t happen when everything is easy. It happens when you challenge yourself, step outside your comfort zone, and do things you once thought you couldn’t.

Whether it’s lifting heavier, trying a new workout, starting a business, or chasing a goal that scares you, you’ve got to be willing to get uncomfortable.

But remember, there’s a difference between challenging yourself and ignoring your body’s need for recovery.

Discipline over motivation. Consistency over perfection.

Never let your mood dictate your actions.

Keep showing up. Keep growing. Keep betting on yourself. ❤️

Crow to Toe Tap Handstand

Let’s practice Crow to Toe Tap Handstand! Vicky was absolutely nailing it in class today.

1. In Crow, keep your kneecaps high into your armpits.
2. Imagine a vacuum forming just below your belly button. (I’ll show you how to find that sensation in another tutorial.)
3. Scoop your belly in and up under your rib cage.
4. Straighten your legs, keeping your toes connected to your wrists.
5. That suction is what helps lift your hips and float your legs up.
6. Keep pressing firmly through your palms.
7. Keep your arms straight.
8. Stay up there for a few breaths.
9. When you’re ready, bend your knees toward your chest and tuck your tailbone under slightly.
10. Tap your wrists with your toes again, then float back to Vinyasa.

Patience pays off. Even if your toes don’t lift away from your wrists yet, keep creating that vacuum under your rib cage and work on straightening your legs. That’s the important part, not kicking your way into it.

Give it a try, and follow for more tips!

Movement is therapy. According to Mr Pilates “Physical fitness is the first requisite of happiness.”

Couldn’t be truer. And if I may add, asking with it the spirituality communion to your automatically. Let’s move.

An abbreviated sequence of Uttitha Hasta Padangusthasana, Ashta Chandrasana (high lunge), Visvamitrasana, Wild Thing, standing splits, arm balances, headstand, V-sit, and foot behind the head.

Next time you’re in Sun Salutation B, try adding a pike before Chaturanga.

The best way to approach this is to bend both knees after Warrior 1 and imagine hopping high to lift your hips and bring your big toes to touch close to your palms before sending them back to Chaturanga.

The progression is to slow it down and make the entire movement controlled, rather than relying on momentum.

1️⃣ Warrior 1
2️⃣ Bend both knees
3️⃣ Jump and bring big toes together
4️⃣ Hips high, gaze down
5️⃣ Shift forward into Chaturanga

Tag me if you try!

Special thanks to Sarah for demonstrating this transition! She traveled from San Antonio to join my Press Handstand Workshop in Dallas at Second Side Yoga

After all these years like 15 years or so, Susie constantly delivers one of the most fun sequencing. Let’s try this vakra hanumanasana (loosely translated crooked monkeys deity to navasana boat pose.

I’ve fallen in love with being active, not because of how it makes my body look, but because of how it makes me feel. Stronger, healthier, happier, and grateful for what my body is capable of doing.

Movement is a privilege, and I never want to take it for granted. A body in motion stays in motion 🤍 Grateful for the beautiful flow @nc.yogi

Come move with me at @form_southlake or @lifetime.westlake. Whether it’s yoga, strength training, or pilates, there’s always room for you! Also subbing at @secondsideyoga

And when I’m not helping people build stronger bodies, I’m helping protect what matters most through insurance! 💙

Friday yoga just hits differently! 🧘🏼‍♀️💙

A great flow, good energy, and the perfect way to wrap up the week! Nothing better than rolling out your mat, moving your body, and doing something good for your mind, body, and soul.

Happy Friday! 💕

We seem to be in a world where it’s all about hitting poses, but hitting the pose doesn’t really show someone’s control and mastery over it. Being able to control how you come in and out of the pose does.

Part of my approach is to usually start with your foundational movements and build control in a pose before stringing them together. Transitions are something I’m really passionate about exploring and teaching, and they’re a big focus in my workshops and trainings.
