Hey there!

Did you know the gut can “talk” to the brain, and that conversation between the two might help treat alcohol use disorder? CU Anschutz scientist Paula Hoffman wanted to figure out how!

Alcohol use disorder (AUD) affects nearly 29 million Americans, but current treatments aren’t very effective, especially at preventing relapse.

So these researchers set out to make something better: a new molecule called Nezavist. Surprisingly, tests showed it doesn’t enter the brain at all, but it still changed animal behavior. You might be wondering…how?!

Nezavist acts on GABA receptors in the gut that triggers a hormone that activates the vagus nerve, which is a direct line from gut to brain!

In rats, Nezavist reduced relapse to alcohol drinking across multiple behavioral tests! This means Nezavist could help treat AUD without ever entering the brain, using the gut’s own hotline to get the message across.

The ABCT Psychosis and Schizophrenia Spectrum Special Interest Group (PASS-SIG) is seeking creative work for our Lived Experience Creative Showcase in Baltimore.

We welcome storytelling, poetry, spoken word, visual art, photography, music, film, creative writing, multimedia, and other forms of expression exploring psychosis, unusual experiences, recovery, resilience, identity, mental health, or community.

No professional artistic or presentation experience is needed. This is not a competition—we hope to create a welcoming space for authentic expression, connection, understanding, and hope.

If you’ve struggled with the cognitive side of bipolar disorder, you are not alone. Cognitive symptoms in bipolar disorder are real. But they are often dismissed.

New research suggests targeted brain stimulation may one day offer an option for addressing these challenges.

A 2025 study in BMC Medicine explored combining multimodal neurostimulation (tACS + rTMS), which are two types of non-invasive brain stimulation, as a way to target cognitive impairment in people living with bipolar. They found meaningful improvements in attentional control and cognitive flexibility.
