Book Description 📕

Sophie and I were the best of friends. We lived together. We laughed together. We did everything together.
Now I stand in the rain outside the churchyard, hiding behind the trees. I know her family blame me for her death. They will never believe me, even if I try to explain.
And then a woman among the crowd draws my eye and I start to shake. The long strawberry blonde hair. The shape of her nose. It’s Sophie.
It can’t be true. But in the days that follow, when I see her again at the end of our street, when I find the photo in her empty room, when the cruel tricks start again… I’m forced to wonder:
Am I going mad, or is Sophie still alive?
And if she’s still alive, what will she do to me?

My Review 🖊️

When I hear that Suzie Lynes has a new book coming out it’s music to my ears . I don’t even need to read the blurb for it . So or course I was super excited to read The Woman at the Funeral. This book is about Maggie and her best friend Sophie . They have been friends for many years and even share a flat together . So why then is Maggie attending Sophie’s funeral but hiding behind a tree at the graveside watching her best friend being buried . I won’t say any more but if you’re a psychological thriller fan you need to read this book NOW ! This book was one I read in one day as I genuinely couldn’t put it down . Every chapter had me wanting to read more . I thought I knew where it was heading but in true Lynes still I was completely off the mark . With a few red herrings and some great twists I was rendered speechless at times . An edge of your seat, fast paced thriller that I absolutely loved . ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Oh I love a book with lies! I absolutely love it 🤪

We have Megan and Freddie who are married with two kids, then we have Cat who becomes a library assistant with Megan, but, why… that’s all I’m going to say.

It’s a fun book. Easy to read. Page turner. I don’t know why, but Megan, she did my head in 😂 kind of felt sorry for her but in my head, she was annoying.

@selynesauthor another amazing book!

Also @oh_the_thrill_of_it thank you for another recommendation to get me out of a BAD slump!

Susie (S E) Lynes is one of those authors that I will read even if I've not read the blurb. Her books are intense, dramatic and always incredibly entertaining. I did read the blurb for this one and I just knew that she was on to another winner. The premise is intriguing and the opening pages pull you in like a fish on a hook ..... you are gradually pulled in further and further until you just cannot stop reading.

So, a tiny bit about the plot. Maggie and Sophie were flatmates, work colleagues and best friends. They shared everything. Sophie is dead. Maggie is watching her funeral from a distance. It has been made clear by Sophie's family that she is not welcome at the service. And then, Maggie sees Sophie getting into one of the funeral cars. How on earth? Sophie is dead, she knows she is, she saw her.

.....

This is a tremendous portrait of a toxic relationship. We often see these in fiction in romantic relationships but rarely between friends. I think it's safe to say that women's friendships can be the most joyous, comforting things, but when they go wrong, they really can shatter a person. There are behaviours described within Maggie and Sophie's relationship that are, at times, difficult to read and to digest. The most unscrupulous and really quite evil character doing heinous things whilst creating a facade of smiles and tenderness.

......

This is a gripping, unsettling and utterly addictive psychological thriller that explores the darker side of friendship with such skill. I was completely caught up in Maggie and Sophie's story, and even when I thought I knew where things were heading, I really didn't. Absolutely brilliant and highly recommended.

What a ride! I began this one intrigued but found myself becoming increasingly angry. It is told via multi pov of former best friends Maggie and Sophie with a then and now Pov both covering some events from the different povs.

Both women feel they are not at fault for the breakdown of the relationship but the almost childish and manipulative carry on from one friend in particular really enraged me. I think it's testament to how well these characters are written that I felt so strongly about them and their actions.

This story is relatively slow paced to begin with but it really helps to build the characters and set the story up. Told with a strong sense of unease and suspense throughought, you are unsure of which way things will go, then the twists and turns start and it's a hell of a ride. The amount of gaslighting, manipulation, toxicity, psychological warfare and unhinged antics is insane!

That ending blindsided me and and I'm not sure how I feel about it as it was a bit on the sad side and I think I need some justice to be served!

This one's for you if you love a story where the bad guy is not 100% clear from the beginning and will have you doubting yourself, and is filled with gaslighting, psychological manipulation and some absolutely unhinged antics.

Thank you to S.E. Lynes and Bookouture for this advanced complimentary copy via Netgalley. This review is being left voluntarily and all opinions expressed are my own.

🌟🌟🌟🌟

This is my fifth read by this author and I've really enjoyed every one so far - this being no exception.

I loved that once were drawn in from the shocking start, this followed with short snappy chapters told in both dual pov and a dual timeline and this had me unable to put this book down.

Every time I had to leave it, I couldn't stop thinking about it and how it was going to play out.

I loved the start of Maggie and Sophie's friendship and how they had this instant bond - but as soon easily happens, things start to go downhill quickly and I actually really didn't like the way Sophie took advantage.

As we learn more about each of the characters,no think I'd made my own assumptions about what might have been happening, but then with each new revelation, my thoughts kept changing.

The writing style was fast paced and although this was a fairly chunky read, I was so immersed in the lives of these friends, I just flew through it in no time.

I loved the twists that kept coming and I'm not even sure I spotted how this was ever going to end - nor who I could trust.

I loved the 90's setting which took me back to my own youth - remembering a time when there were no mobiles, always makes me wonder how we coped at all!

I loved this read and can't wait to see what's next from this author.

💕Thank you to the author, Bookouture and NetGalley for my ARC copy - this is my honest review 💕

We gathered for Richmond Reads to give the unvarnished truth about the publishing industry. It’s a tough business but one that offers incredible rewards for those who can hack it.

My advice is that you need to treat being an author as a business: understand the market, your product, your target audience, how to reach them, and how to convince them that your book is worth their time and money.

Literature is art but a book is a product. If you want to succeed, you need to learn how to bring it to market.

🔥 Nobody writes toxic female friendships quite like S.E. Lynes! 🔥
Just when I think she can’t get any further under my skin, she delivers The Woman at the Funeral.
Maggie is hiding behind a tree, watching her best friend’s funeral. Then she sees Sophie, her supposedly dead best friend, get into the funeral car. 😳 Excuse me, WHAT?!
From that brilliantly unsettling opening, Lynes weaves a dark, twisty tale of friendship, betrayal, manipulation and narcissism that had me questioning EVERYTHING.
Nobody does complicated female relationships quite like Lynes. Loyalties shift, the truth gets murkier, and just when you think you’ve worked it all out, she pulls the rug from under you again. I genuinely found myself second-guessing what I was reading!
There’s also a haunting, almost ghost-story quality to this book. Not supernatural horror, but that creeping sense of dread that makes your skin prickle and keeps you turning pages long after you should be asleep. 👀
Sharp, unsettling and frighteningly believable, this is psychological suspense at its finest. Lynes doesn’t just mess with her characters’ heads, she messes with yours too!
And that final page? You’ll be questioning EVERYTHING. 🖤
📚 Have you read this one yet?
