Where does culture come from, and where does it go next? Tokyo is a good place to ask.

Many of us at Kammui call the city home. Part of what keeps us here is the way it brings people, ideas, and practices from across Japan and the world into everyday contact. Things take root here. They change through use. What came before remains part of what happens next.

Tokyo Salone puts that exchange to work year-round, bringing people together to share what they’ve learned through their practice. This November, people working across design, architecture, food, music, and film will meet in person, trade ideas, and spend time with work outside their own fields.

We’re honored to be Tokyo Salone’s Official Japan Experience Partner. For speakers and guests joining Tokyo Salone and Nourish this autumn, we’ve put together a collection of journeys that continue beyond the city. Fermentation along the Noto coast. Art across the Seto Inland Sea. Heritage crafts in Toyama. Each of these and more offers time with the people doing the work, alongside guides who know the place and can help you understand it.

My recent routine has been to wake up, make my warm cup of tea, and my iced coffee, sit on my desk and write out all my morning thoughts.

Do I get in the zone? Not all the time but at least I do the same thing every day.

The word “flow” is actually pretty modern. Apsychologist, Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, coined it a few decades ago after studying artists and athletes who lost themselves completely in what they were doing.

Zen already understood this from their own practices.
Routine.
You do the preparation the same way, enough times, and focus stops being something you force.

Because the whole idea of zen is to understand what the “self” is, and we can’t fully manage the “self.”

So instead of trying to get into the zone and trying to focus, or be more productive, Zen philosophy straight up tells you,
JUST DO IT.
because the only thing needed to get in the zone is to start doing that routine you always do, like make your morning coffee, do your stretches, sit, and start your day.

Because once you have that routine, it will be a lot easier to get into the flow and get GOOD work done :)

sooo if you wanna learn from experts like him…
this nov. thought leaders across design, architecture, engineering, and chefs gather in tokyo!
comment “tokyo” and will send you the link to join me to learn from THE best :)

NOURISH
Tokyo 15, November
Link in bio.

Before the plate, there is the land.

The people who tend it.
The hands that coax life from soil.
The knowledge carried through seasons.
The relationships built over years, sometimes generations.

NOURISH begins here.

With listening.

To the patience of the fields.
To the rhythm of the seasons.
To the growers, gatherers and makers whose knowledge makes nourishment possible.

In Japan, there is a long history of chefs learning from the landscapes and communities around them. We hold close the reverence that places such as @nomacph and the former @inuajp brought to their relationships with Japan’s farmers, fishers, foragers and producers — relationships rooted in curiosity, humility and exchange.

But reverence alone is not enough.

If we want a different future for food, we have to examine the systems around it.

Who is valued.
Who is visible.
Who carries the risk.
Who benefits.

And how we move beyond extractive relationships towards ones built on reciprocity, respect and shared purpose.

NOURISH brings together people working across food, culture, creativity and the land to explore the relationships and ideas shaping what comes next.

Not simply what arrives on the plate, but everything that makes it possible.

Culture. Ecology. Creativity. Community.
Knowledge. Responsibility. Relationship.

Rooted in Japan, connected to a wider world.

Because food can be a medium for change. But only when we understand where it begins, whose hands make it possible, and what we owe in return.

The land is not simply a resource.

It is a relationship.

And every plate begins long before it reaches the table. 🌾
