Sanctuary, the ambient room, was designed, curated and produced by Peter Palombi. Over several weeks of pre-production, Peter led a volunteer team of twenty artists + installation contributors through the making and framing of seventy artworks; alongside lighting, structural elements and articulated rigging.

The works drew on the ideas and curatorial direction behind Entanglement, taken from Pauline Oliveros’ Quantum Listening: live sound as a field of possibilities, the listener as a participant in its making, and the web of connections that forms between people sharing a room.

Suspended at shifting angles beneath a canopy of netting, the frames gathered into a single field overhead. Among them was a commissioned series by Sacramento-based visual artist @semnvch.

@crescendoresearch brought their latest-generation tactile subfloor, while @_dustcollective designed and mapped the AV space.

This workshop will focus on designing and binding a homemade book. Bring your own text or use a sample from the shop to layout, print, and construct a small book. All materials are included in this stand-alone class.

Sacramento print artist Mark Mattney will lead our group through the process, with a focus on layout, designing text and images for print, and constructing a book from a source of your choice!

This is a BYOBook event: Bring your own digital photos, scans, or texts to work with our studio equipment, including scanners, design software, and the physical tools required to print and bind a book.

LIVING MATERIAL in the Garden Room, with Carly Semon and Avery Lambert

Living Material is a gallery of growth by Carly Semon, as she preserves and presents communities of fungi and yeast.

Carly's gallery of biomaterials includes the dried sheets of bacterial cellulose produced in the first phase of kombucha fermentation.

Following a mother → child → mother relationship, their cooperative process generates layers of life. This process forms the sheets of cellulose that house a matrix of bacteria and yeast. Each layer records a period of time, revealing the complex proceses of simple life.

The shapes and symbols were inspired by different types of movement, the simple machines of our complex world. Inspired by the gears and drives found in manmade devices such as the geneva drive, harmonic drive, and planetary gears, the translucent material reveals the collective efforts of a community to us.

Our Fermentation Class Series is taught by with local worker Avery Lambert, a microbial researcher by trade, and a food fermentation enthusiast!

§ November 1: Kombucha course - Initial fermentation

The workshop will consist of a mini-lecture/presentation on the world of food fermentation, and a laboratory where everyone will get the opportunity to develop their own kombucha pellicle, AKA SCOBY.

§ November 7: Sauerkraut by Region:

The workshop will consist of a mini-lecture/presentation on the world of food fermentation, and a laboratory where everyone will get the opportunity to start their own sauerkraut culture!

§ November 22: Kombucha Course - Final Fermentation

The second fermentation step taught on November 22, 3 weeks into SCOBY Development, will use the culture you made in this class. This is a standalone class!

Carly Semon is a Bay Area based visual artist investigating the laws of boundary, brink, and edge through material research and painting. Her background in the physical sciences mixes with ideas of surrealism, sensation, and the human form to offer a unique attention on reality. She experiments with growing biomaterials at her home in Oakland and makes paintings in her studio at Hunter’s Point Shipyard in San Francisco, CA.
STATEMENT
I’ve been growing the sun in a plastic kid’s pool since my 26th birthday. It takes consideration to provide a material with incentive to become animate, but once believing in itself, growth abounds passively. An object initiated into its own right. I’m interested in the chemistry of belief, or what it takes to arrange small freedoms along an amorphous trail of questions. Fixing my attraction to an evolving state. Responding dynamically. I found a book called Light sitting on the curb of Waller Street last year. Much of the narrative surrounds this ‘beach’ in space called the Kefahuchi Tract: “A broth of space, time, and heaving event horizons; an unpredictable ocean of radiant energy, of deep light. Anything would happen there, where natural law, if there had ever been such a thing, was held in suspension.” M. John Harrison. I did what I needed to do to erect this into my line of sight. Now information may be a substance.
