MEET THE SU TEAM - International Representative: Lolita Marchenko

Hi! I’m Lolita, a 4th-year oboe student 🤓👋🏻

I play, travel (90% with my oboe), and spend a lot of time between Cross Keys and Wigmore Hall. I watch far too many movies, make questionable jokes, and am usually the person to ask for recommendations - concerts, galleries, exhibitions, dance, yoga, you name it (not saying I actually do all of these - I just know where to go!). And if I don’t, I probably know a friend who does! 😜

🇬🇧 A month has passed and I still hear the echoes of @bimf.uk. I am deeply grateful for the festival staff who belived in this young brazilian student. The professors and collegues were wonderful and contributed deeply for a beautiful week full of music and magic. As Susan, the director of the festival, said in the last day "while you were playing Giovanna, it looked as you were having a piece of heaven". Playing Dvorák (my favorite string quartet!), coaching with such high-level professors and performing chamber music was transformative.

It’s hard to believe that it’s already been a whole year since joining RAM and I feel truly blessed to be surrounded by such an amazing and incredibly talented bunch of people.

It’s impossible to encapsulate all that’s happened over the latter half of the year but some of the highlights include:

- Our Swedish Song recital, performing with @sirikrosness
- Returning to Girton for a recital with @_sharonliang
- Late night recording sessions with @senrolitta
- Back to Cambridge with @finlay_bloore
- St James Piccadilly with @annacoopermusic
- Performing in the band for @habanera_afterdark
- Post audition beach escapes!
- Playing with @ben.atk for his final recital

Can’t wait for Autumn term with lots of exciting projects coming up!

This past week we had the pleasure to attend the @bimf.uk
We are very grateful for all the coaching we received from @jepsoncello , @gabriharp and other amazing professors.
We had the chance to work extensively on our duo repertoire, perform it and work individually in other chamber music ensembles.
It was an intense week, but we leave Sherborne with new knowledge, friends and inspirations.
Thank you @pcconcours and @bimf.uk for the financial support which made it possible for us.

Words fail to describe the day.
And it’s not just the day, but it’s a culmination of months of work going into one evening of 2 hours. Every single day, there would be some hurdle, something going wrong, sleepless nights staring at a computer screen, writing emails, failing, rejections, financial struggles. There’s so much more. It’s the musician’s life, no one talks about it. No one is there waiting for you, you gotta do it yourself. My flatmate gave a very cool analogy to me - that I’m a pilot, who wasn’t given an airplane. So I went on and built my own airplane so I could fly.
All the things before the glamour of concert black. Being incredibly sick the evening before the concert and struggling to physically get through the dress rehearsal. The music in front almost blurring off at one point mid performance. zoning off, working off a muscle memory.
And then you stand in front of 78 musicians, every single one of them there because they want to be there. They don’t have to be. No one has to be. They’re there cause they love it.
In front of packed audience.
You look at the faces of the players, and there is a mutual sense of understanding, a look that says “we’re gonna be okay. We’re all in this together. Let’s make some beautiful music together”
And you do. All the work, all the ill health, the tiredness, the stress - everyday I thought why are we doing all this?
And when you’re there and it’s happening, you just know, it’s worth it and I’ll do it all over again without a second thought.
It wasn’t perfect. But it was beautiful. Someone I really admire said - no performance of a piece will ever be as great as the piece itself. So in a way, all of our goals are unachievable. And that’s what’s keeps it going.
When I first went to see an orchestra live for the first time back in 2024, they played Rachmaninoff’s second and when I was there, I had something say in me - “This is what you’re meant to do” sounds cringey but sometimes it happens like you see in movies.
And on Friday, when we finished the gorgeous 3rd movement of the Rachmaninoff, it all came back - we had made it. And it has all been worth it. It always will be. Let’s do this again sometime.
