Found a hidden Koi Farm in KL that you can visit for FREE! 🎏🇯🇵We brought our boy along and he had so much fun looking at all the Koi, especially the tiny baby ones.🥹🐟

@yamakoshi_koi specialises in premium Japanese koi imported directly from Japan + the whole place is surrounded by greenery. It really gave us a little taste of Japan without leaving KL.🇯🇵🌿

In a previous era spent developing cities and townships, adaptive reuse of old buildings was not yet part of the vernacular of planned urban renewal. Its inclusion in the imaginarium of #livablecities would come much later.

So it was with slight regret that we’d enjoyed Kuala Lumpur’s recent mushrooming rejuvenation projects:
• Sentul Depot @sentuldepot - train depot repair workshops transformed into Grumpy Bagels @grumpybagels x dance hotspot x pickleball courts
• The Pocket @thepocket139 - old shop lot re-subdivided and interior reorganised into indie F&B and retail
• High Street Studios Pocket Park - part of old shoplots transformed into a tranquil public space to retreat from the city’s heat and hustle
• The Toffee - mid-century art deco insurance offices retrofitted for contemporary art museum UR-MU, F&B Belum Friday, with rooftop public space Boombong
• Liku Likoo Bukit Bintang - building abandoned for 30 years reclaimed as a rustic cafe
• Tangga - upper floor of 1920s heritage shophouse - access reconfigured externally for a kuih and coffee cafe
• Ghostbird - mid-last century heritage residential bungalow adapted into a coffee roastery and cafe
• House of Wheat - repurposed colonial-style row houses turned cliff-like textured plaster cafe

Soundscape for this was Rory Shiner’s talks on the Sermon on the Mount:
• Jesus’ non-abolishment of the Law and Prophets isn’t mere architectural adaptive reuse - ie. not that salvation-necessary law is now transformed into tips for Christian living
• through the series of “you have heard … but I say” passages, Jesus reveals Old Testament commandments in their deepest intention/fulfilment
• “You therefore must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.” — Matthew 5:48. As God’s children, we must be radically whole/complete/unhypocritical like the Father.

Concept & styling by @doncefinefloristry , with official styling props by @thebalvenie @hendricksgin adding the finishing touches.

The 121-year-old railway depot that could have disappeared. 🚂

There was a time when Sentul Depot was the beating heart of Malaya’s railway network.

Built in 1905, the Central Railway Workshops employed more than 5,000 workers at its peak. Locomotives were repaired here, railway components were manufactured, and for decades, it was one of the largest railway engineering workshops in Southeast Asia.

An entire community grew alongside it. Railway workers came from different parts of the world, bringing with them their languages, traditions and cultures. Over time, their communities took root, leaving behind places of worship that still reflect Sentul’s diverse history today.

When railway operations eventually moved away, the workshops were left empty. Demolition may have been the easier choice, but for those who understood its significance, losing a building that had carried over a century of history was simply unconscionable.

Instead, YTL Land saw something worth keeping.

Today, the workshops have taken on a different role. The Diesel Room is now home to @grumpybagels 1905. Workshop 2 now hosts padel and pickleball, while the remaining spaces continue to welcome everything from car exhibitions and fashion shows to weddings and community gatherings.

The best moment is when preservation can coexist with ordinary life, allowing an old building to remain occupied, useful and woven into the everyday.
