"I think Dan sometimes gets forgotten. Whether it was random, whether it was intentional, he went out in that desert with Spit, and they died together, and they died for the thing that brought them together."

In this exclusive clip from Pj Perez's in-progress documentary MURDERED ON THE FOURTH OF JULY, a spotlight is shone on Daniel Shersty, who was killed with his friend Lin "Spit" Newborn by racist skinheads 28 years ago this weekend.

In 2025, production resumed on "Murdered on the Fourth of July," and in October, the filmmakers were able to sit down (finally) with former Clark County Assistant District Attorney Robert Daskas, one of the prosecutors in the John Butler murder trial.

In this web-exclusive clip, Daskas explains why Butler was the only person initially charged with the murders of Lin "Spit" Newborn and Daniel Shersty, and why—despite knowing Butler did not act alone—he was the only one of the conspirators to be convicted of the crime.

Now in post-production, "Murdered on the Fourth of July" is a documentary that explores the circumstances surrounding the ambush-style murders of Newborn and Shersty, two young anti-racist activists, by neo-Nazi skinheads in the desert outside Las Vegas on July 4, 1998.

I recently finished Kazuo Ishiguro's Klara and the Sun (which I highly recommend) a story that explores themes of hope and humanity in the age of AI. A key takeaway is the protagonist's realization that individual worth and "heart" are not inherent qualities, but come from the connections we forge with others.

As we wrap up 2024, I find this theme resonating with me deeply. While one significant chapter of my life has ended, it helped center me on the true sources of meaning in my life: the people who consistently support me, create new memories with me, and encourage me to be myself, independent of titles, achievements, or awards. Going forward, my aim is to embrace a simpler, more present way of living, cherishing my time with family and friends and appreciating the small moments around me.

The rest are roughly chronological within 2024. I would've added another 40 more if I could. There was so much joy and warmth this past year

As much as MURDERED ON THE FOURTH OF JULY is about a community-shattering hate crime, it's also a celebration of the lives and legacies of Dan Shersty and Lin Newborn, as evidenced in this exclusive clip from the in-production documentary.

MURDERED ON THE FOURTH OF JULY director/producer Pj Perez (@sequentialmadness) first met Lin "Spit" Newborn when they were both regulars at midnight screenings of the Rocky Horror Picture Show. As Perez writes in a new post on the film's blog, "Spit ... could be disturbingly quiet or disarmingly loud."

Our friend, journalist and filmmaker Pj Perez (@pkwymedia), is directing a new documentary film called Murdered on the Fourth of July, which tells the story of how years of mounting tensions between multicultural, anti-racist skinheads and white neo-Nazi groups led to the brutal murders of Black poet, punk rocker, and new father, Lin “Spit” Newborn, and his white friend and ally, U.S. Air Force serviceman Daniel Shersty, in the desert outside Las Vegas on July 4, 1998.

What happened to Spit and Dan rocked not only the Las Vegas creative and activist communities they were a part of, but the anti-racist movement globally. Their killing exposed the threat posed by white supremacist groups–a threat that, as we’ve seen especially in recent years, still persists to this day, which makes telling this story, unfortunately, more relevant than ever.

Pj launched a campaign for the film this week on the creative crowdfunding website Seed&Spark, where they have 30 days to raise $12,000 to help jumpstart production on this documentary. And because Murdered on the Fourth of July is a fiscally sponsored project of the nonprofit International Documentary Association, almost all donations to the film are tax deductible.
