We always used to joke about meeting in Paris one day. We would throw it into text threads, suggest it when things were feeling shitty, and talk about someday.
It turns out fanciful talk can become a reality, and 20 years of friendship can land you in Paris after all.

Thank you to these two beauties who made dreams come true, and helped keep my child happy and alive in the prettiest city.

@yogatreesf!!! Thank you for being a source of growth, transformation and community in my life for the last 12 years! I first began practicing at yoga tree when I moved to San Francisco all on my own in 2008. I had just turned 23 years old. I was a young artist and newbie yoga teacher with only 2 years experience of teaching. I didn’t know anybody or anything in SF and yoga tree classes gave me a sense of home and family. I eventually began teaching at yoga tree in 2012, and although it was not the only place I worked, Sunday morning yoga at the Valencia studio was a particularly special offering that I got to teach for almost a decade. When Rasa joined me 5 years ago with his magical guitar, Sunday morning “Vinyasa w/ Live Music” came to life! This weekly class became like yoga church for myself and many of my friends and my students 💜

There are so many more memories, and people I could mention, but the point is not in the details, but in the vibration and the gratitude we feel now as we stand at the end of an era. As yoga tree announces the more permanent closure of its physical studios (with no known date of re-opening, nor any idea of which locations, if any, will be there on the other side), I feel like I am standing on the edge of a ship setting sail for unknown waters. Nostalgically I wave goodbye to familiar places, memories, and friends. I spent 15 years building a career and a community as a yoga teacher, and almost over night that was forever changed by covid19.

Now being pregnant and looking forward to motherhood and a break from the busy life of yoga teaching full time, I am filled with gratitude, awe, and joy for the fullness of this closing chapter. I’m sure someday I will teach and gather and make more offerings again. But for now I find myself once again letting go, and leaning backwards into the great unknown, leaning forward into the mystery. And all I have to say is Wow! Life! Wow. There is so much love in all of it.

I was lucky enough to spend most of my 20s and early 30s in tangled piles of friends who loved nothing more than to venture into wild places. I’m lonely and nostalgic this week, and the inability to gather with friends in small and large groups during continued shelter in place has sent me down some memory rabbit holes. ⠀

In 2007, a group of us set out on 5 month wilderness experience, backpacking through parts of Arizona, Utah, and California. Based on the model of living and learning in the wild, introduced to us by the Sierra Institute, we didn’t so much backpack through the wilderness, as live in it, often spending 2+ weeks in one region. ⠀

On the Kaibob plateau we did a 4 day vision fast facilitated by guides from the School of Lost Borders. In the icy days of early spring the White mountains we read books aloud to one another. In the river days of the Yollies we backpacked cake and whiskey in for a birthday party. We lost someone for 3 days (and found her). Someone fell 15 feet off a sandstone cliff. We did a spring ceremony for the rattlesnakes with grandmothers near the Dragoon Mountains. We wrote endless poetry and prose in an exercise called Flying Pens. We got into arguments and held painfully long councils. People got sick. We spent one long night in Vegas. Vans broke down. We pumped a lot of drinking water. We played capture the flag in the meadows and forest of the Marble Mountains with a Sierra Institute group (we were alumni. We won). We bought the 7th Harry Potter and cut it into 7 pieces so no one would have to carry the whole thing. We caught trout and made salads from wild sorrel. ⠀
⠀
It was not an easy trip, but it was one of the best decisions of my life. I have permanent injuries from my backpack, but I also have the freshwater spring at Mono Lake. I have the bear near Sky-high Lake. I have mornings with steaming coffee and a journal. I have ridiculous invented songs still remembered today. I have lifelong friendship built from woodsmoke, summers storms, and wildflowers.⠀
⠀
The year after, I made a collaged book of all our adventures. Here are 10 of my favorites. Poems are from trip members.

The signs and symbols have been everywhere. It’s amazing what can happen when you keep an open heart and trust the path you have chosen to walk. For the past 3 1/2 years we have been planning on moving the Nevada City location. We just had no idea we’d end up moving right into the heart of downtown🌈 working hard in hopes of opening up beginning of June🌱
