Mountain biker, gravel rider, roadie, alt cyclist, bikepacker—cycling has a knack for sorting us into increasingly specific groups, each with its own bikes, clothes, rules, and expectations. In my latest piece, I discuss where I fit among them and make the case for being a “civilian cyclist” and how borrowing a little from each might make us happier. Port Alice scouting trip! When I was riding the Tree to Sea Loop in 2023, I started chatting with a sweet older lady outside Port Alice Family Foods. She asked me if I going “up and over,” and proceeded to point at the big mountains on the other side of the inlet. I had no idea where she was talking about, but all I remembered is that it sounded magical and that I shouldn’t go alone. Miles planned the perfect route and we finally got to ride it, 3 years later, with a wonderful bunch of friends.

Huge step for the team! We got out for our first pedal around the marina and it’s running great! Couple small tweaks to do this weekend but we can not thank @seriousbicycles enough for the design and build of this system. Onward to Alaska we go! @racetoalaska #thunderbird1178 #scalawag
