Highlights from Birmingham Inclusive Choir's very first Showcase event recently. The choir are performing at the festival 🎤 this July too, so why not pick up a free ticket for the day. They told us they are looking forward to attending this year’s festival to help spread the word about the choir and encourage more people to join their sessions from September! The choir has run since 2021, in partnership with Soundabout, and continues to be a great success. Face to face sessions take place monthly at Midlands Art Centre (MAC), alongside online sessions in between. In-person sessions are fully inclusive and accessible, led by experienced SEND practitioners, with a range of instruments The group loves coming together to share their love of singing and music-making, having lots of fun. Services For Education (SFE) is a Birmingham based charity that uses the power of learning and of music to create and build confidence amongst children, young people, adults and communities across our City. Their mission is to bring music and learning to life and they believe that every young person should be able to grow up to be the very best that they can be, regardless of their background. Search the servicesforeducation.co.uk website for information about their inclusive choir on Saturdays at the MAC in Birmingham. 🎪 Festival Details 🎪 👉 FREE ticket link in bio 👈 📅 Saturday 4 July 2026 🕓 11am - 6pm 📍 Matthew Boulton College (BMet College), Birmingham City Centre, B4 7PS 🙏 Can you support us with a donation? 🙏 👉 Link in bio to our website with Crowdfunder donation page. #birminghamdisabilityfestival #servicesforeducation #birminghaminclusivechoir #inclusivechoir #inclusivechoirs [Video description: Clips of the choir's first showcase event with captions explaining more about the choir them and the Services for Education charity.]

"Curriculum needs to be a practical working document that inspires teachers to feel they have the capabilities and skills to teach music that can be lifted from the page, and used easily in planning and practical music making ideas." This quote came from a discussion with Ben Sellers when we were prepping for some Curriculum training we were delivering. Ben, on behalf of Leicester Music service, nottingham, leicester, lincoln, derbyshire - is working with a cohort of schools whose music lead is not a SEND specialist; a commonality in SEND schools. When I said the above quote, Ben said to me, "say that, say what you just said". It was a great accolade for someone as established as Ben to draw on my knowledge in such a way. The long and short of it is, curriculum should not be a tick box exercise, it should be a framework that can be used and utilised by teachers who are already working at maximum capacity and music probably isn't their specialism. Teachers are constantly spinning plates, and with such a focus on core subjects and demonstrating progress, they need a music curriculum that not only provides them with deliverable ideas, but inspires them to love teaching music. We want music to be a part of the week the teachers, support staff and learners look forward to, we want it to be creative, a release from the usual school day. Happy, creative staff = happy, engaged learners.

WHAT A CARRY-ON! 🎹 The @carryonplaying 49-key folding keyboard is one of our most popular products with schools and hubs, because it solves the biggest issue with keyboard lessons - space. Large 88-key digital pianos and workstations for production are great for more advanced learners, but what about students who are starting out? The Carry-on 49 key folding keyboard packs all of the features you’d need for a beginner keyboard - plenty of sounds, built-in speakers, metronome and more - into an ingenious folding, space-saving design, that means whole-class keyboard lessons are a whole lot easier. These crafty keyboards are also rechargeable, so no more clutter AND no more cables. Way back in 2023, we visited Chad Vale Primary School in Harborne, Birmingham. Piano and keyboard teacher William Cheung at @servicesforeducation has reaped the benefits of getting the whole class playing together. There are plenty more classroom favourites from the Carry-on range, including their excellent guitars and basses for portable rock and pop setups, more keyboards and controllers, mics, stands and accessories, and genius speakers (their portable party speakers are another popular choice with hubs). #carryonkeyboard #foldingkeyboard #musichubs #foldingpiano

Still reflecting on the Birmingham Inclusive Choir showcase at the MAC this weekend. Watching our young people perform with such confidence, joy and individuality was genuinely moving. As a music practitioner, moments like this are a reminder that music is about connection first and foremost. Every participant brought something unique to the performance — whether through singing, movement, instruments or simply being present and sharing the experience with others. It’s been incredible to see how the choir has grown since its online beginnings during lockdown into such a welcoming and creative community. Huge thank you to the families, carers, support staff and everyone who helped make the showcase possible. Most importantly, thank you to our amazing choir members for reminding us what inclusive music-making can and should look like. 🎶 - - - #singingteacher #musicteacher #pmld #autism #seneducation #singing #senmusic #birmingham #B30 #kingsnorton #choir
