SF Department of Children, Youth and Their Families: Making San Francisco a great place to grow up!

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Lights on! 💡 Today is the 27th annual Lights On Afterschool, and our Family Wellness Center team at Homeless Children’s Network is proud to celebrate alongside @sf_dcyf and partners across San Francisco.

At our Family Wellness Center, children, youth, and families come together to connect, grow, and thrive. Our kids find a place to play, learn, and be supported by caring adults who show up for them every day.

We asked our young people what they love about the program, and their answers say it best. “We learn together and learn new activities.” “I like going here because I can play, I can learn new stuff, and there’s food.” “I like this program because it’s fun.” 💜

Across the country, for every young person in an afterschool program, four more are waiting to get in. Days like today remind us why programs like ours matter so much.

Today, we’re joining @sf_dcyf and @sfunified in celebrating Lights On Afterschool, a nationwide celebration of the importance of afterschool programs.

At CYC, afterschool is a place where friendships begin, interests grow, and young people build relationships with adults they can count on. From elementary school through high school, these everyday experiences become part of growing up, giving students a familiar place to return to as their needs and interests change.

Read our latest story about growing up with CYC afterschool and the relationships that make these programs meaningful at the link in our bio.

This year, we expanded high-impact tutoring across 22 public elementary schools, reaching 2,400 students in grades K through 3. In partnership with Department Children Youth and their Families, SFUSD, private donors, the @sfedfund, and Chapter One, we are bringing tutors into classrooms, and it’s working.

For the first time in five years of tracking, Bessie Carmichael’s kindergartners met SFUSD's literacy goals. Principal Jennifer Freeman credits the tutoring her students received.

When kids get off to the right start, they do better their whole lives and our whole city can benefit. We will continue investing in San Francisco kids and to set them on a path to success.
