POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

It’s hard to express how grateful I am to everyone who came to our sold out show at The Burl last night. It was truly a special evening because of the audience and the artists who stood on that stage with me to welcome in THE TULIP POPLARS. I love you all forever.

Special thanks to The Burl and Joseph Beth @josephbethlex for hosting us.

This summer has been full of sorrow, but also joy. Friends who are chosen family are the best.

“Cold Mountains,” a song about separation and loss, is one of my favorite songs from the rural south. This song was sung by Texas Gladden, and I learned my version from friend @sgleaves . I love the very tactile imagery in this song- I can feel the coldness of the mountain waters and the chilly air amongst the rhododendrons on the mountainside. While this imagery can often be one of comfort in songs, here it’s a reflection of how alone the narrator feels. When we miss our loved ones, even familiar places can feel alien.

Some of the ways you hear me using my voice in this song are forms of expression that have been a part of traditional song in Appalachia- influenced by European, African-American and (undoubtedly) Native indigenous cultures. Where I choose to resonate in my body, how my voice breaks, how I might slide on a note…these are ways of moving sadness through the body and letting the song do its therapeutic work.

You can join me and other tradition-bearers in my upcoming course “The Unquiet Grave” to learn these vocal techniques and explore Appalachian and Scottish songs of lament and release. This class weaves together a healthy dose of storytelling and folklore alongside song to help us understand traditions to mourn and release the dead across Scottish and descendant Appalachian cultures.

You know you want ittttttt!!! And it is now available for purchase!! Check out my Bandcamp page to purchase a physical copy of my first album, “Creekbank”
The physical CD comes in a jewel case with a trifold insert and a little bit about each song. It will also be signed and come with a Charity Gilbert sticker (for the first 50 copies sold).

The CDs are $15 dollars each (with a $3 shipping fee). This also comes with the downloadable digital version of the album as well! I’m shipping them out myself so if you order one, give 3-4 days for me to get them in the mail before ya get worried lol.

If you aren’t able to purchase a CD, that’s okay! You can still listen to the album on Spotify, YouTube, Amazon Music, and most other places you get your music. Just look up “Charity Gilbert Creekbank” and you should be able to find it. My favorite tracks are “Miss Amphetamine”, “Fresh Strawberries”, “Creekbank” and “Morning Light (Liquor and Memories)”.

I hope ya take the time to listen and give this post a share!!! Thanks!

France en Mai part 2: Marseille with @holdenspace & @sgleaves

I had spent some time in Marseille when I studied abroad nearby in Aix in college but really fell in love with it this trip.

1-7: Rewrote a memory of a treacherous all-day hike I’d done in the georgeous Calanques in the early ‘00s before it was a national park with one much more fun and manageable. Swam in the brisk sea and carefully skirted around a wild boar family (twice!)

8-10 View of Cathedral de La Major from our apartment

11-14 I will be thinking about the perfect anchovy pizza and apple tart at local spot Chez Etienne for a long time. Same with Limmat (tout le menu!) on the Cours Julienne, a neighborhood we kept retuning to.

15-16 Was drawn to these Moroccan hand painted profession signs at La Palme D’or and heard beautiful kora music on the Vielle Port on our last evening

17 Many walks through the city with @muttgomery, sometimes he even wore his Bernie outfit (ball cap, blue oxford, navy blue pants)
