Part II of Sculpture al Fresco I, II and IIi at Great Fosters, Egham, Surrey in 2011, 2012 and 2013. 🌳🌳🌳

From a monumental vibrant orange, powder-coated, steel knotted obelisk by @julianwildsculpture to a functional barbecue sculpture by @jonathan_trayte that fed the crowds on the opening night, every year promised new experiences for the visitors as they traversed the 50 acres of gardens and parkland.

I had bridges, moats, hedges, arbors, a grass amphitheater and a lake to play with besides the former royal hunting lodge of King Henry VIII where I was able to debut the first stack sculptures of @annie_morris_studio 🌈🌈

Magical to look back upon!

This is what June looked like… 🍃 ☁️ 🌞

What a long month? It’s felt long… we started June off with some Frist Aid training which was very informative and a bit of fun too!

Lots of art this month which is always a good thing. @sarahlongley_painter and @sgregory.art showed Paths Crossing in the Old Bakehouse Gallery. This show was very popular with lots of people through the door! Fantastic work on display!

We got some new stock and suppliers in the shop this month, got some trips in to the cinema and out and about for coffee and such locally! Made jam, got some plants for the shop and did a jigsaw too! 🧩

We went to the @uhi_nwh show in Auchtertyre and then the two centres, Auchtertyre and Portree, had their combined art show in the Old Bakehouse Gallery at Create. The show was amazing!

We are also cracking on still with renovations at Create! Scraping up tiles and painting walls seemed to be the big jobs for June. More to come in July… 👀

In July we will be focusing on the @belladrumfestival build… that time of year again! We are so excited. Does anyone know what we are planning to make??? 🎪

‘Fast Lines’
acrylic on canvas, 48” x 60,” 1982
collection: Milton Keynes University Hospital.

PLUS ….swipe for 14 of my reference photos.

Sometime in the winter of 1981/82 I took b&w photographs of the construction of Milton Keynes Central Railway Station when it was nearing completion.
I wanted to include a sense of speed and so, rather than just working from one photographic image, here I used a montage of elements from different photographs to create the painting’s linear structure.
The colour scheme choices depended, more freely, on a mix of memory and imagination.

Looking at the image of the painting now I’m thinking, yes, that’s impressive. Technique-wise, I’d translated Charles Sheeler’s method of overlapping oil glazes into ones created with sprayed acrylic, diluted with varying amounts of medium.
I had acquired the first of the books I own about Charles Sheeler soon after it had been published in 1975 and, in January 1981 I saw various of his works for real in the USA.
Most inspiring was the painting ‘Ore into Iron’ of 1953, now in the collection of the Museum of Fine Art in Boston but, at the time, it was still part of the Lane Collection and I saw it at the house of Bill and Saundra Lane in Leominster Massachusetts. (hanging on the back of the kitchen door!)

‘Fast Lines’ was on display at the official opening of the railway station in May 1982. Sir Peter Parker, then chair of British Rail, expressed approval (of the painting…I think he liked the station as well😉).
In 2017/18 Arts for Health Milton Keynes, who curate the art collection at the hospital, had the painting repaired and cleaned by brilliant conservator Harriet Pearson.
Only in writing this post have I realised that, due to personal crisis at that time, ‘Fast Lines’ was the last of the paintings I made in Milton Keynes. Any poignancy about that is tempered, in retrospect, in knowing that a chapter had finished on a high and that I would soon be on ‘fast lines’ to new adventures!

Our cat Neo dropped by Create today 🐱

He had a wee look around to see if anything took his fancy. Safe to say the thread spools weren’t a winner but our fan brushes certainly were!

He wasn’t particularly interested in @varshtat ‘s lovely cat print which we were sad to see as it’s one of our favourites… but he had a good sniff of @carpe_designs pencil cases as well as @theriversidestudio ‘s card display!

He checked out every nook and cranny of the shop and inadvertently dusted the corners for us in the process. Very handy… 🤫

Your paintings and drawings are amazing. 🤩 It was a great pleasure to meet you @sgregory.art. 🙌🏻 And sorry for my drone. 😇

It was a treat to have this painting by @sgregory.art in the studio to frame. It features Struan’s granny busy in her garden. 🌺🌱 We saw the painting at Stephen’s joint exhibition with @sarahlongley_painter at Create, and it was our favourite of his Kyle of Lochalsh series (except for the paintings with trains, or the fire station…). Struan really enjoyed looking at it again.

The painting was purchased by someone on the Terrace so will hang in one of the houses featured.

Framed in deep obeche with a painted matt black finish.

'Laertes', oil on board, 188 x 100cm, 2023
From my exhibition 'Eye to Eye' with good friend Stephen Gregory. This is based on my Dad's beautiful poem Laertes about the reunion between Odysseus and Laetres. I've set it in Lochalsh rather than Ithica.

LAERTES

When he found Laertes alone on the tidy terrace, hoeing
Around a vine, disreputable in his gardening duds,
Patched and grubby, leather gaiters protecting his shins
Against brambles, gloves as well, and, to cap it all,
Sure sign of his deep depression, a goatskin duncher,
Odysseus sobbed in the shade of a pear-tree for his father
So old and pathetic that all he wanted then and there
Was to kiss him and hug him and blurt out the whole story,
But the whole story is one catalogue and then another,
So he waited for images from that formal garden,
Evidence of a childhood spent traipsing after his father
And asking for everything he saw, the thirteen pear-trees,
Ten apple-trees, forty fig-trees, the fifty rows of vines
Ripening at different times for a continuous supply,
Until Laertes recognised his son and, weak at the knees,
Dizzy, flung his arms around the neck of great Odysseus
Who drew the old man fainting to his breast and held him there
And cradled like driftwood the bones of his dwindling father.
