Shaaranki Kulenthirarasa is a “radio roomer” at the Toronto Star this summer! 🗞️

As an editorial trainee, Shaaranki is in charge of monitoring social media platforms, and regularly checking in with emergency services to provide tips to the newsroom. She also writes breaking news stories under tight deadlines and works closely with editors to implement feedback. ✍️

She said one of her highlights this summer is the messages she’s received from readers about her stories.

“My favourite experience at this job so far has got to be the wholesome emails I get after writing a good news piece. In May, I wrote about how a ski resort manager provided the chance for a dying dog to roll in the snow one last time. I got so many emails and messages after the story thanking me for writing about this. Some even said it made their days,” said Shaaranki.

Sharaanki also said that her position at the Star did not come without hard work and persistence. After unsuccessfully interviewing for the same position last year, she implemented the feedback she received and continued to build her journalistic skills at TMU. When she applied again this year, she got the job! 💫👏👏

She encourages her fellow @journalismtmu students to stay optimistic when going through the job search process, be bold and try again if need be!

Congrats on all your hard work @shaaranki and thanks for sharing with us!

Have you also been doing something interesting this summer? Please share it with us by sending a DM or emailing media.connect@torontomu.ca.

Yesterday, yet another spill in Mimico Creek, this time the result of a diesel fuel leak. While residents are still dealing with the strong smell of fuel in the air and inside their homes, the Ministry of the Environment @onenvironment and Minister @toddmccarthydurham continue to downplay the severity of the incident in media statements.

Every few years, Mimico Creek becomes the site of another environmental disaster. And every time it’s the same story: containment booms are deployed, investigations are launched, and we’re assured that lessons will be learned.

Yet here we are again.

Three years ago, the catastrophic Brenntag fire sent oil-contaminated toxic sludge down Mimico Creek, killing fish, birds and mammals and ultimately reaching Lake Ontario despite containment measures. Before that, a 2015 oil spill coated more than 100 ducks in petroleum.

At this point, spills in Mimico Creek feel less like isolated incidents and more like a recurring feature of the watershed. The pattern is: spill, cleanup, “investigation”, forget, repeat. Never mind that this is a critical waterway already under stress with poor environmental conditions.

If repeated spills over more than a decade have not led to stronger safeguards, better monitoring, improved stormwater controls, or publicly visible prevention measures, then it is fair to ask whether any lessons are actually being learned at all.

The people of this community deserve more than emergency responses after the fact. We deserve to know what concrete steps are being taken to prevent the next spill, not just contain it once it has already happened.

Still in genuine disbelief that I was recognized for 30 Under 30 alongside @shaaranki 🥹🧿

@avalkuralhq started from conversations me and Shaaranki kept having about the lack of Tamil girls in unconventional paths. As Tamil girls navigating these spaces ourselves, we know how isolating it can feel. @avalkuralhq was created to help other Tamil girls get the visibility they deserve and more importantly, to help them feel seen, heard, and celebrated.

So grateful to @tamilcivicaction , @thmcouncil & @neethan for this recognition. Truly honoured to be recognized alongside such inspiring people.

Forever thankful to my friends and family for always supporting me 🤍
And especially to @shaaranki , for being the best co-founder , and @wrestlingchaos for always being our biggest supporters and pushing us to dream bigger 🥹💗

If you haven’t checked out @avalkuralhq yet, take this as your sign as our newest episode is now streaming on Spotify 😛

This truly is only the beginning 😌🧿
