One pandemic morning, the words “from an early age I learned not to trust my mind” came into my head, accompanied by the guitar riff that starts the song. Throughout 2020 I found respite from isolation in co-writing with friends over the phone. I called Jon Sunde and we wrote the rest of the song together. I struggle with the ever-present tension between heart and mind — what we know to be truth versus what we truly feel.

Heart & Mind is out everywhere today. The album Make the Birds Fly is out Feb 26th. CD/vinyl preorder now available from @sleepycatrec

Written by @shaneleonardstuff and @sundeje

New artist, new album!! Eau Claire producer Shane Leonard has actually been in the Sleepy Cat-alog since 2023, producing @chessa_rich's Deeper Sleeper, featuring some of my favorite grooves and drum tones. If you're a cred head you'd find his name on dozens of projects including multiple @humbirdhumbird and @sundeje records, and local acts @mipsomusic and @skylargudasz. I highly recommend visiting the discog section on his website if you're in the market for new music.

Make the Birds Fly feels like a perfect introduction to Shane as an artist: curious, funny, strange, tender and wonderfully unpredictable. The title track, recorded in a single take on a Tascam Portastudio, feels like a manifesto for the whole album: Shane trying out lyrics in real time before landing on the simple desire, “I only want to make the birds fly.”

Today you can read the full album bio by Sarah Magill, and preorder vinyl/cd from our website. Link in bio

Album out Feb 26th 2027. Single 1 drops Tuesday.

Catch him live in Durham, NC Oct 31st at @sleepyfest Cattyrompus

Happyyyy Friday friends,
Alaska is out today, streaming anywhere and everywhere you get your music fix

This song is equal parts levity and heartbreak, an attempt to giggle momentarily at a subject I hoped would become less poignant after I wrote it instead of more. An attempt to find joy in the sorrow. I’m excited to find out what it’ll mean to all of you, and what kinds of bittersweetness it’ll bring to your feelings about today’s world

A huge thank you to the dream team that helped me bring this one to life out in Portland ♥️

Recorded at Flora in Portland, OR
Produced by @shaneleonardstuff
Mixed by @shaneleonardstuff at The Bungaleau, Eau-Claire, WI
Engineered by @shaneleonardstuff and @clarabakery , assistant engineer by Ryan Bridenstine
Mastered by Joseph Freeman

Wurlitzer keyboard by @jennycd

If you’ve always dreamt of paddling up to an island and watching a (stacked-as-hell) lineup of friends sing to the trees, the water, and the sky…now is your time🍁🦆🐟

Happy to have drawn up a poster for this whimsy filled idea conceived of and hosted by @friendsofbeanisland. Paddle yourself or hop in a canoe taxi courtesy of @eauclaireoutdoors! 🛶🏝️🫘 And if you, like I did, are wondering what and where the heck Bean Island is, head to www.friendsofbeanisland.org for more information.

Thanks to @benholmen for putting this together!

We love you @dottersbooks 📚🧚🏻💕✨🌈

It’s always a great day to support ur local bookstore, frequent the library, and practice MEDIA LITERACY !!

Not easy out in the world (which is literally what this song is about) and it’s been feeling particularly dark lately but there are such pockets of goodness. Be sure to visit those pockets frequently :)
