That’s a wrap on Packaging Your Imagination!

I took very few photos, probably because I was so busy scribbling notes to ponder later.

Connecting with writer and illustrator friends old and new is always a highlight, especially when combined with all-day breakfast at Fran’s.

Now that I have been fed—body, mind, and spirit—it’s time to absorb it all and take a fresh look at the story I’ve been working on.

Book recommendations for Deaf Awareness Month! These are only a handful of recommendations from a beautiful and strong Deaf community.

As always you should be reading books by diverse authors and featuring diverse characters year round. However, since it’s Deaf Awareness Month I thought it would be a good time to highlight some books by or featuring d/Deaf or Hard of Hearing (HoH) people.

Shari Green is an award-winning author of novels in verse. She loves being out in nature and can often be found wandering the beaches or forest trails near her home. Shari lives with her husband on Vancouver Island, BC, Canada, on the traditional territory of the Laich-Kwil-Tach peoples.

New blog! "Memories & Connection" by @shari_green, based on her picture book Savor the Day, illustrated by @gabbysdrawings and published by @sleepingbearpress.

"I’ve always believed it’s important for kids to have a nurturing or mentoring sort of relationship with an adult other than their parents. I had that with a beloved girls-group leader, and I was fortunate to be that person for a number of teenagers over the years. These relationships offer connection, a sense of safety and belonging, a reminder that you are loved—and worthy of love. Parents and guardians offer these things too, of course, but they’re supposed to. Having another trusted adult who cares for you and believes in you can have a huge impact on your life.

We often find care, connection, and belonging in books, too. (Maybe when a grandparent reads to their grandchild, it’s a double dose of such things. That sounds about right—a double dose of love.) Recognizing such things when we read with a child is a joy, oftentimes poignant or perhaps bittersweet. We don’t all have such fond memories, though, to be reflected in the pages of a book. When we were growing up, we didn’t all have a bond with folks in the older generation, and our kids don’t all have that either. When that’s the case, seeing those bonds in stories can still be a comfort. The characters in a book, sharing a story, sharing a day, sharing play and discovery and meals, can all whisper to a child: you are loved, you are valued, you belong and you matter and I’m glad you’re here."

What is your favorite way to spend a summer day? 🏖️

These are a few of my favourite things, novel in verse edition.

How can I choose just one??! These books hold a special place in my heart for one reason or another.

But Mrs. Howard, why do you love novels in verse so much?
•They are easier (in my opinion) to read as there aren’t as many words on the page. It may feel less intimidating for reluctant readers.
•Short chapters. Readers will feel like they are going through the book quickly because they are!
•Even though word count may be fewer, each word feels so intentional and impactful.
