I tunnelled out of my medically-imposed Shawshank today to join the Makciks for a fabulous Art Jam exploring unconventional tools for making marks. Some things were a success - sticks and forks and feathers, toothbrushes and bubble wrap and credit cards, egg cartons and pine cones. Others, like cheese graters and rubber chickens, not so much 😬 Messy, curious play like this is healing - for mind and body - so it was just what I needed. Thanks so much for organising @olijstudio_travels @nyetzyart and @sharonlysim ☺️🙏 PS. I’m back in captivity now 👍

We’ve done it again. Another fantastic art jam with unconventional tools. No pencil or brush in sight. What a blast. Everyone made new tools and new friends.

To join our next one. Become a member of Olij Studio Sketchers World, a WhatsApp Community.

We run one about 3-4 times a year. No fixed timing or dates. Be in the know in the community announcements.

Thank you to @nyetzyart and @sharonlysim for the admin team work!

Our next one is in 4 weeks time. It’s going to be super different and in a stunning space.

Had a full day outing with #makcikandfriends today. We have been wanting to go and sketch at our beautiful airport for the longest time, particularly at Jewel. We finally did it today in conjunction with the celebration of our nation's 61st birthday this month.

This is the first sketch of the day at a cafe on the 3rd floor. Comfortable and with a good view waiting for the Rain Vortex to come on.

Used a limited color palette on a prepared page with a watersoluble blue ink that has a purple tinge. Self bound sketchbook with HP Yangtze paper. Medium - acrylic markers.

Second sketch after lunch. The waning energy is showing. Sketching lines more careless and main objective is to scribble something down. Composition felt a bit half hearted. This is on level 1 of the forest valley accompanied by a larger crowd compared to the morning and a playlist of what seems to be like tunes from Steven Spielberg movies. Not complaining though.

For this sketch I used my self bound sketchbook with different types of papers. This is a toned tan paper from Strathmore. Medium used are acrylic markers from Posca and Arrtx.

This is at 2.30pm, half and hour before we gave ourselves a deadline to call it quits and leave the airport for a 1.5hrs journey home. No more energy for anything but moving body parts. @kylajanestudios suggested sketching 'frankenpeople' and together with @jab_sgp we spent half and hour doing that. Interestingly at the end of the session we found ourselves sketching the same people, just in our own styles. It was fun and good practise for people sketching.

A small Paint On sketchbook by Clairefontaine. This one is a blue tone paper. Lots of fun with this. Colored put on at home.

View from the cafe on level 3

The forest valley with travellers. Great for people watching.

Catching the shuttle trains made the sketching more interesting.

The crew this morning. Some left after the morning sketch.

The dramatic start of the Rain Vortex at 10am sharp!!

Always a thrill to catch the train when the fountain is on!

People often think the sketchwalk ends when we close our sketchbooks.

For me, that’s usually when a new part of the process begins✨

Sketching on location helps me slow down and really observe. I notice the shapes, the light, the architecture and the atmosphere in a way I never would by simply taking a photo.

But what really makes these sketchwalks special is sharing them.

At the throwdown, we lay our sketches side by side. The same place suddenly appears through different eyes. We talk about composition, colour, materials, little discoveries and happy accidents or sometimes disappointments.

I rarely come home thinking, “I’m done.”

More often, I come home thinking, “What if I tried it this way?”

That’s exactly what happened today. One sketch on location became two more at home :one exploring a different composition, the other a different subject and medium.

That’s what I love about urban sketching.

The sketch may finish on location.
The creative process doesn’t✨

This morning, I joined Makcik and Friends urban sketchers for the first time. Being an introvert, I was not comfortable with the hugely popular Urban Sketcher group on Saturdays. Only went 2 Saturdays in 3 years and the results were personally disappointing. Finally, this morning, a friend @sharonlysim encouraged me to join this smaller cosy group of makciks and I did. Long bus journey. Took me an hour to get to Tiong Bahru. At 9.30 am, I found a table at Toast Box opposite this very pretty flower shop. Bought a cup of kopi-c and sketched happily. Time passed quickly. At 11 am throw-down, I only finished inking and some splashes of watercolours. By the time I reached home, it was nearly 3 pm. Daydreaming on the bus and missed the connecting bus-stop. The bus next sped 8 km on the highway! But this was such a wonderful day out. Looking forward to join Makcik and Friends more often in future.

Ever wondered who The Makcik & Friends Sketchers are? Here is a chance to get to know us better.

Yes, we are not your normal weekend sketching groups. Many of us are not able to join sketching groups that meet on weekends due to other commitments. Some of us decided that we should start a weekday group for those who wish to have a community of like minded ones to practise art.

We are a loose group and you are welcome to join us as you wish. We have no IG nor FB accounts. However we have chat groups. There is no membership but you will only get to be on our chat group if you are or intend to join us regularly. Inclusion in chat groups will depend on your regular attendance. Am sure nobody wants to be in a group and get spammed every week 😂

We are part of The Olij Studio Sketchers World run by Susan. Announcements of our activities are posted on the announcement channel of the chat group, my IG stories and on Singapore Sketchers FB page.

If you are interested to join our activities, you can either DM me here or Susan at @olijstudio_travels or any of those who are our regulars.

A Celebration of Community & Connection 🥂✨

After weeks of hard work, the mural was officially launched today. It has been an absolute privilege to work with the community, for the community.

What an honour to have Ms Lee Hui Ying, MP for Nee Soon GRC @leehuiying.sg ; Mr S. Devendran, CEO Sree Narayana Mission @snm_singapore ; and Ms Evie Tan, RC Chairman grace the occasion.

The best part of this journey wasn’t just the finished wall, but the weeks leading up to it. To every resident who stopped by for a chat, or shared your excitement as the colours unfolded — thank you. This mural belongs to all of you!

Art has a unique way of bridging generations and fostering a sense of belonging. I hope this piece brings joy and pride to the neighbourhood.

Special shoutout to @sharonlysim and the team of Syncroony volunteers - Jes, Kelvin, Cassandra, Ken and LC. This project wouldn’t have been as meaningful and fun without you. Thank you.

If you’re in the hood, check out the mural at:

‘Let’s paint that fountain’

I honestly thought it’s the fountain at South Beach tower, but it turns out to be the recently refurbished Tan Kim Seng Fountain over at Connaught Drive.

It’s one of that moment, where the shade is great, breezy, and there’s even a cute little lizard (which we later found out is an invasive species), and the subject is really nice amongst the lush greenery of the park.

It was also nice catching up with some of the Makciks, and chatting about art, life in general.

Touched up my work when I got home, adding whites to ensure the shadow pops, and added water! It’s a fountain after all!

I haven’t been posting many urban sketches lately as it’s felt like a bit of overkill to post twice in a day with #the100dayproject but I do love the more spontaneous nature of the sketches I do when I’m out and about in the world. So you’ll have to suffer through two posts today 😬 I approached this sketch of the newly restored Tan Kim Seng fountain without a single blue pen, pencil or marker in my bag 😬 but I did have a pre-rolled blue background in my sketchbook, thinking it would make a useful sky sometime. I also had a chunky red-brown paint pen that I was determined to use somehow - hence the Rain Trees. Thanks for another lovely sketch session Makciks 😊 #usk #urbansketch #urbansketcher #mixedmedia
