How about a non-traditional thanksgiving dinner for a non-traditional year? It’s been such a weird year but there’s still a lot to be thankful for. Cheers to all the friends and family that have played a part in our lives and adventures this past year. We love all of you! Here’s to future adventures…

Day 5! Our last day on the Powell River traverse. We woke up to a beautiful sunrise with a bank of clouds that flowed over the mountains. The clouds were thick as we started our steep descent to the valley bottom and then lifted as we hiked on. We saw our first Grizzly print deeper in the brush but our group was so noisy going through the thick brush that any bear would have been afraid of the Curborne Clan. We found our first actual rope in a steep section- a big improvement on the “tree ropes” we used along the way. We finally thought we hit the super highway at the bottom when the trail turned into a quad track. Then we discovered giant spider webs across the trail with toonie sized spiders. Through all the trail I managed to keep my cool and appear confident- the spiders cracked my armour and I nearly lost it. I had to get Jason to take the spider pics because they creeped me out too much 🕷What an epic adventure we had with the Osborne’s- a collection of memories I won’t forget in my lifetime. Thanks to everyone who followed along & shared in a small piece of the adventure! Keep exploring and stay safe…

Day 4- part 2. I couldn’t resist putting the last picture first as it’s one of my favourite from the whole trip. Snapped just at the right time to catch some stars and the outline of the trees. This day wrapped up with a gorgeous view of Emma lake. As we descended the valley we found a REAL trail that was marked and maintained. Sort of like a super highway compared to what we had been hiking through. We made it to the lake with plenty of sunlight to spare, and each took a quick dip in the icy water to freshen up before setting up camp. We explored around the lake, had a quiet moment together watching the sunset and reflecting on what we had just done. One more day…

This was Powell River day 4. I love playing with reflections on water so was thrilled when we left camp and looked back to see the mountains reflecting in the water. We kept climbing up from camp and turned left around a corner to find a sketchy traverse across a shrubby slope. We took our packs off to slide around a rock stuck that out across the path- a move that was too risky to do with our packs on. The next few sections were bouldery up a slope and then across another rolling ridge. We thought the hardest part of the day was behind us but didn’t realize the bushwhacking we’d have to do up a steep slope. We used our “tree-ropes” a lot to get up the slopes. The hardest sections have few pictures because they were, well, hard and took all my focus. Still a bunch more hiking to do on day 4 so stay tuned tomorrow…

Day 3- part 2! We continued along the trail- lots of ups and downs today which made the hiking slow. Our original plan was to hike much further but the terrain had other thoughts for us. It’s always hard to capture the steepness in photos- they never seem to do it justice. Keep that in mind. We named one of the sections “flip ridge” for a somersault one of our crew took down the ridge. We started to use the bushes and trees as “ropes” on the steep sections for extra protection. Our legs definitely got a good workout and we were pretty tired by the end of this day- making it to camp in time to eat and go straight to bed. Next up- day 4…

This was Day 3 (part one)! We woke up to a beauty day with clear blue skies and decided to move onward. In hiking the we think of the opposite expression “what goes down must go up”. When you finish low, your next day normally starts with a climb. We figured out how to safely get up the cliff. It was so steep in sections we had to relay our packs up and work as a team to get over the ridge. This section built some mental toughness in all of us! We continue along the route traversing across some large rock bands that held beautiful icy tarns. The last picture is a crack that we needed to work our way down since the slap was too steep to walk down. A few more highlights of day 3 to come tomorrow…

Day 2 highlights on the #southpowelldivide We woke up to a socked in morning with clouds and fog rolling in and out of camp. As you can see by @jasonlcurry pose, he was deep in though trying to figure out if we should turn around or keep going. The last two pictures show the rock slab that we needed to go up. Remember- this is a backpacking trip, not a mountaineering expedition! We had limited safety gear and need to make sure we didn’t put anyone at risk. For scale you can see @hannahos_ in the last pic standing in front of the slab. A fall would be significant. So we spent the day exploring possible ways around it or options to minimize risk. We also danced, napped, painted, drank some scotch and ate lots of food. Stay tuned for what route did…

Here’s some of the highlights from the fist day of the traverse. We spent most of the day going up and across rocky ledges. We have one of the sections the nickname “vertigo alley” It was the most technical rocky stretch that was steep and had nothing to stop your fall if you slipped. We had to take our time to plant our feet firmly on the grabby rock and make sure that we had stable footing in a section with unstable rocks. It was mentally and physically challenging trying to keep everyone safe and made for a long day. Stay tuned for day 2 tomorrow.
