Yesterday I was drawing my activity on blood and thought I engaged my daughter to draw simultaneously. After a half hour of concentrating on drawing my blood cells, I looked up to see my daughters hands and legs coloured in black permanent marker. I felt like a terrible mum! Her hands and legs still have a black stain today. After lots of washing.

I don’t know whether my experience is unique. But I have come to the conclusion that kids gravity to mischief and danger like a moth to the tantalising light. I spend half my time, trying to catch my kids before they get injured or like yesterday colour themselves in permanent marker. My walls have already been christened.

Motherhood is hard. I would defy anyone to say otherwise. You are in between trying to raise a child in a crazy world, while preventing injury, and trying to set a good example while trying to manage a routine. Most nights I lie in my bed and think “phew, another day down, kids still alive!”

So this quote rings true for me today as I lie watching my son sleep. Motherhood is crazy ride. To all my mummy pals (tagged you lovelies), you got them through another day! You did great! Hugs from another exhausted mama.

This is perhaps a funny but true statement in my life. I love coffee. Perhaps a little too much. The number of times in a day I make a hot cup of coffee is pretty frequent. I always end up with a cold cup of coffee to drink ultimately. And that’s a story about motherhood. Nothing really goes to any schedule. Most of the time you are adapting and trying to do multiple things at once. I have learnt so much about life and about myself through this mini human beings. Their energy levels are always high. They attract danger like a light attracts a moth. I’m continually growing and learning from them.

Is it hard? YES
Is it exhausting? YES
Is it worthwhile? YES
Would I change my life? NO. Absolutely not.

Today is my birthday. It’s a special birthday to me for many many reasons. I have reflected upon the people, events, experiences, failures, habits, personality, hobbies and everything in between. I start and will end this day with extreme gratitude. I’m grateful to my foundation; my mum, my kids and my rock. I’m grateful to all my real friends who love and support me (I tagged you, to say heartfelt thank you!) I’m grateful for the amazing team I work with at RGH and Icon Rockingham. I’m grateful to every single one of my patients who give me a purpose and a drive. I am grateful to my God for making me, me. I am grateful to be the person I am, flaws and all. I am grateful for every failure because you taught me more than any success. I am grateful for the things that allow my creativity; my cooking, my drawing and my poetry. I look forward to the next year because I am going to evolve and grow and rise. I am ready for what is to come.

The first time I took my son to the paediatrician, he said that I was an anxious mum that needed to calm down. I met many hurdles along the way with my son’s diagnosis. My son was labelled with Autism. So I decided to take control. I decided to create learning content 4 years ago. I started making alphabet based learning stations. My initial stations were basic and my initial drawings were terrible. I created stations that sometimes failed miserably. But I’m still here. Making content for my kids. I done the alphabet series 4 times. I have come up to a standard that I think is acceptable for my art. My son is blossoming. My daughter is blossoming. So this statement stands. A strong woman is not one who never fails. I have failed heaps. A strong woman always gets up after a fail. I met some remarkable women/mothers on this platform. I’ve tagged you to let you know that you are AMAZINGLY strong. Never forget that! I have a lot of respect and love for you!

It’s a wrap!

It feels a bit ar*e about backwards to be summarizing my December reads now, when I spent the whole of last week spamming you with a slew of wrap ups for 2022.

But, hey ho, for the record if nothing else, it does feel kind of necessary.

December was an okay sort of month. I wasn’t able to read as much as usual, huffed and puffed my way through a couple of chonkers to complete my 22 in 22, and sobbed all the way through cooking Christmas lunch while listening to Richard E Grant describe sitting at his wife’s bedside while she took her last breath.

On the upside, there were a couple of real crackers and a delicious few hours spent in the company of Jo Cannon’s astonishingly lyrical prose, which sounds even better on audio.

I also proudly completed by second full year of reading one memoir every month 😇

Can you say, hand on heart, that you know all the titles on your TBR?

Or are there some surprises in there?

My TBR is OVERFLOWING with surprises! As evidenced by my trawl to find suitable titles for my November #spellthemonthinbooks stack.

🐱🐶 STACK FOR A CAUSE 🐶🐱

My lovely friend Sally @salboreads is once again on a fundraising spree. This time for the animal charity @the_blue_cross

Across the UK, animal rescue centers are under unprecedented strain, as more and more people are forced to give up their beloved pets due to the expense of feeding and caring for them. But rescues do not have unlimited resources.

And this is where The Blue Cross comes in. In addition to its regular work proving veterinary and behavioral support, it is currently running desperately needed food banks for pets.

Sally has pledged to donate £1 (up to £50) to this worthy cause for every blue book stack posted with the hashtag #bluestackforbluecross

What’s more, an anonymous donor has offered to match Sally’s contribution, making a potential £100 in total!

I’m delighted to support Sally’s efforts with this messy pile of blue books, which is being observed askance by our ginger tom, Shanks. No inducement could persuade him to look at the camera 🙄

I urge you to please join in, share and help raise awareness of The Blue Cross and this initiative. And if you have a pet, it would be lovely to see it in the photo too.
