BLACK BROADWAY: THE EARLY YEARS is TONIGHT! BLACK BROADWAY: THE EARLY YEARS DATE: Friday, March 13, 2026 TIME: 7pm (Doors at 6:30pm) LOCATION: Brooklyn Music School Playhouse (126 St. Felix Street, Brooklyn, NY 11217) TICKETS: $25 General Admission, $15 Students/Seniors at bit.ly/BlackBwayEarlyYears Instagram: @nmpblackbroadway Website: www.nietzschemusicproject.org 🎶 Antonin Dvořák’s “American” String Quartet in F major op. 96 conducted by Tali Makell 🎥 Video by Shin Kurokawa @the_shinster In BLACK BROADWAY: THE EARLY YEARS, a 22-piece orchestra conducted by Tali Makell performs Dvořák’s American String Quartet intermixed with African American Spirituals for the first act. The National Conservatory of Music of America (founded in 1885 by socialite Jeannette Thurber) was a racially and gender-integrated organization that trained prominent American composers and their mentors. Antonin Dvořák was the Conservatory’s first director. It was there Dvořák first heard Spirituals from his African American students. Entranced and inspired, he declared their music the new music of America, and one can hear similar pitches in his American String Quartet, which we play alongside those Spirituals in Black Broadway: The Early Years. Listen to this piece and then our previous post and you’ll connect the sorrowful tones. Members of our orchestra expressed they felt like they understood Dvořák‘s Quartet for the first time when played with the Spirituals. It’s an enchanting experience! Witness these historical New York musical connections and cross-inspirations yourselves in person TONIGHT at @brooklynmusicschool historic Playhouse. BLACK BROADWAY: THE EARLY YEARS Comes to Brooklyn Music School’s Historic Playhouse BLACK BROADWAY: THE EARLY YEARS DATE: Friday, March 13, 2026 🗓️ TIME: 7pm (Doors at 6:30pm) 🕰️ LOCATION: Brooklyn Music School Playhouse (126 St. Felix Street, Brooklyn, NY 11217) 🎭 TICKETS: $25 General Admission, $15 Students/Seniors at bit.ly/BlackBwayEarlyYears 🎫 Instagram: @nmpblackbroadway Website: www.nietzschemusicproject.org In BLACK BROADWAY: THE EARLY YEARS, a 22-piece orchestra, the Chamber Philharmonia of New York, conducted by Tali Makell with guest vocalists Bahati Barton and Sailor Mayberry will perform Dvořák’s American String Quartet intermixed with African American Spirituals for the first act. Spirituals inspired Dvořák, early Black Broadway composers, and multiple styles, including Gospel and Ragtime. The second act features music by early Black Broadway composers Will Marion Cook, James Reese Europe, Noble Sissle and Eubie Blake, showcasing their works from 1902-1921. Conductor and Music Director Tali Makell narrates a multimedia video documentary by Stephen Blauweiss, introducing the themes and history. Through amplifying and honoring these significant historical figures who contributed to New York’s music and culture of yesteryear, some of whom are lesser-known to modern audiences, BLACK BROADWAY: THE EARLY YEARS aims to showcase shared links and influences from past New Yorkers to spark inspiration and foster connections between today’s NYC creatives. I'm still buzzing from my birthday celebration where my friends and I sang 'Optimistic' by Sounds of Blackness together! There's something truly special about communal singing, and our amateur choir did its thing. On a cold Brooklyn night, we gave each other warmth. 🎂🌸 Shoutout to our amazingly optimistic choir director @arinmaya and @ifetayoculture for providing the space for us to come together and sing our little hearts out, like Summer (@latoyia_monlyn’s adorable daughter) does at the end. #community #aquarius
