How does a fringe political idea move into the mainstream?

Right wing populism has changed politics across Europe, but its rise did not happen overnight.

In this podcast series, Professor Henk de Berg speaks with political historian Koen Vossen about Dutch right wing populism, from Geert Wilders to the figures who came before him.

Together, they explore the ideas behind the movement, its impact on Dutch politics, and what liberal democracies can learn from the Netherlands.

1️⃣ The Iliad feels surprisingly modern
Rather than one smooth narrative, Homer’s epic moves through rapid, self-contained scenes — much like scrolling through TikTok or Reels.

2️⃣ Its battle scenes resemble an infinite feed
Warriors appear, fight and disappear, before the poem quickly shifts its attention to someone new.

3️⃣ Each scene delivers an emotional hit
Rage, triumph, humiliation and grief follow one another in quick succession, keeping readers engaged through constant changes in intensity.

4️⃣ Homeric similes work like dramatic editing
They slow down simple actions and make them feel cinematic — similar to music, slow motion and visual effects in short-form videos.

5️⃣ Our media habits may not be entirely new
The poem suggests that fragmentation, repetition and attention-grabbing moments have shaped storytelling for thousands of years.
