Here I am, sharing moments from last Saturday’s one-day event that I initiated for @sheilawestera and her ‘Conversation Pieces’ wearable art, bringing her creations into dialogue with the photographic works of Margaret Lansink, displayed at the renowned photography gallery Bildhalle in Amsterdam. Working deliberately outside the conventions of traditional goldsmithing, Sheila Westera* creates unique, hand-sculpted pieces in silver, 18k gold and other materials, allowing the character of unusual (and sometimes raw) gemstones to determine their final form. Her contemporary jewellery has received international recognition, including three awards at Venice Design Week 2025. It was a wonderful day, bringing two different artistic practices together through a shared interest in material, texture, transformation and perception. @sheilawestera Im a jewellery artist, and I love what I do 💍✨ Every piece in this carousel is mine — created using my own techniques, each piece has a signature style, and I photographed, edited, and post all of It, everything is done by these two hands. There are no two pieces alike, but maybe things have to change, who knows.. But to create one-of-a-kind jewels, still excites me every single day. But there are more downsides each day.. Let’s talk new packaging rules in Europe for a second 📦 Shipping across Europe has gotten a lot harder lately. New EU rules mean small businesses and jewellery artists like me now have to register and pay packaging fees in -each- country we ship to! The big warehouses pay the same fees, but they're shipping thousands of parcels a week. I'm not against the why Packaging waste is a real problem, piling up in places where you don’t want to find them, as the rivers and the seas are suffering and much of it comes from mass-produced goods where no one's thinking twice about what they use, throw away quickly or where it ends up. I get it, and I wholeheartedly support the goal. I just wish the weight fell more on the companies creating that volume, and less on people like Eme — one person, one workshop, one box at a time. These rules are brand new, and honestly, everyone's feeling the growing pains right now. So I'm asking for a little patience while I work out the best way forward. 'I never set out to make jewellery. I believed everything had already been invented.' . Sheila Westera, a Dutch born contemporary Jewellery Artist, who left Amsterdam more than 25 years ago, today works from her studio in the mountains. After a life time of living in cities such as Amsterdam, London and Rome, she settled into a Swiss village around 2017 — each experience becoming part of the process in becoming a maker. Westera grew up in the fine jewellery field through her family, then studied History of Art and Architecture in Amsterdam while working in the diamond and fine jewellery field — learning about technical skill while questioning the human need for adornment. . Arty Scenes Collection. Arty Scenes is her activist collection, shaped by a critical mindset held since childhood. Today she's addressing themes from environmental harm to corruption and more. Some of her pieces carry urgency, others spark dialogue. More recently, she has moved toward a softer, more nature-driven voice within the collection, waiting to be announced.
