Some opportunities can change the course of your life. I stepped waaay out of my comfort zone back in 2014 and some super people helped me find my way. Pennard has always felt safe, warm and familiar and has been the perfect place to meet and write songs. If you ever get the chance, grab it with both hands. PS. They also do weddings :-)

Last week I attended the @ivorsacademy Honours, to celebrate those who have made an extraordinary contribution to supporting, protecting and empowering songwriters.

James Blake’s speech really hit home: he spoke about an ecosystem in which songwriters are increasingly positioned as content creators, feeding social media and streaming platforms and responding to algorithms. Ultimately, we are incentivised to create value for businesses whose interests are not necessarily aligned with our own. He argued that this detracts from and impinges upon the vital creative space and freedom that writers need to experiment, to play and to fail.

As a songwriter and as a leader in songwriting higher education, I feel a sense of responsibility to address this head on. I am proud to say that, at @icmpuk , we create the space for writers to focus on their craft, to experiment, to play and to fail. We also teach them to understand and challenge the systems that profit from their creativity. Preparing someone for a career in music cannot simply mean teaching them how to succeed within the industry as it currently operates; it must also mean empowering them with the insight and the confidence to question it. I believe we have a responsibility to develop musicians who understand their value - creatively, culturally and economically - and who have the agency to protect it. Last week’s event refreshed my commitment to this mission - and I am proud to be a long-standing member of and a Councillor for the @ivorsacademy, who work tirelessly to protect the songwriting profession.

I also got to meet one of my songwriting heroes, @guygarvey1974 , whom I have been a fan of since I bought ‘Asleep In The Back’ in 2001. I have used Guy’s lyrics as inspiration for my own lyric writing (and in teaching lyric writing) many, many times! What an absolutely lovely man – as I knew he would be.

Other songwriting legends pictured here too - all doing brilliant work.

a month ago, i followed my intuition and ended up with one of the most rewarding experiences of my life: my first ever songwriting retreat!
i didn't know anyone when i arrived, but left with deep friendships that made me feel understood in a way i can't describe. 🥹
SO grateful to @shellymcerlaine and @paulsta123 at @sppssongwriting for creating this magical supportive community, my ultra talented co-writers for the fun sessions and cool music we created, and my lovely new friends who inspired me, took me in and showed me what it's like to truly support and watch each other shine ✨️

A wonderful celebration of people doing amazing things in music at the @ivorsacademy Ivors Honours Awards last night. Standing up for independent music creators, speaking out about change that needs to happen, centering artists and creators, doing things differently, and championing the LGBTQI+ community. Huge congrats to @stormzy @jamesblake @mnek @anniemacmanus @emily_eavis Chris Meehan and Victor Finn 👏⚡️

Lovely to catch up with lots of people. A really inspiring evening 💛⚡️🙌

Alisha’s Attic • Illumina • 1998

The Japanese release of Alisha’s Attic’s second studio album Illumina was issued on October 1, 1998, by Mercury Records. It features the standard 15-track international album along with two exclusive Japan-only bonus tracks.

It also has different artwork and the jewel case is full of metallic stars.

Have always loved this band, particularly this album.
