“What interests me isn’t simply whether phones are “good” or “bad.” It’s the psychological and social effects they produce, and how contradictory those effects are.

It’s easy to say, “I’ve spent four hours looking at my phone—that’s depressing.” But there’s a reason we keep doing it. You might spend an hour discovering some obscure television programme from the 1970s, find it on the Internet Archive, and genuinely have a wonderful time. Then, in the next minute, you’re scrolling through rage-bait, feeling bored, ashamed, entertained, angry—all within the same session.

That’s what fascinates me. It’s not just boredom or addiction. It’s joy, curiosity, shame, excitement, frustration, loneliness—all mixed together. The internet is enormous and chaotic. In some ways it’s becoming smaller, concentrated in the hands of a handful of companies, but at the same time it still contains the whole world. It’s impossible to reduce that experience to one emotion.

Captivating 15-minute live readings take place every hour on the hour, from 9am to 5pm on Saturday 23rd, with the final reading at 5pm. Bookstore browsing is welcomed between sessions. Doors open 8:55am, doors close 6:00pm.

The lineup of guest readers is curated by us, with excerpts selected from books on the shelves: spanning topics from ecopoetics to cli-fi, breathing aesthetics to synthetic biology, and even the microbiopolitics of milk.
