Last Thursday, I posted this photo, without the stickers, and @instagram flagged and deleted the photo even after I appealed the decision. It truly is disheartening that Instagram continues to flag images related breast cancer reconstruction. The photographs and information shared are intended for educational purposes.

Throw back Thursday to a photoshoot conducted by @youngbcorg. This particular photo represents the partnership @youngbcorg had with @tigerlily_foundation of eight young black women diagnosed with breast cancer.

This photo is a collage of eight women who so bravely participated in the young breast cancer portrait project. We were afforded the opportunity to have our photos taken in a manner that ensured our comfortability and reflected our individuality.

This was my first professional experience with having my breast photographed and publicly displayed for people to see what breast cancer had taken from me. This moment gave me a sense of pride and allowed me to show other young women my scars and to share the stories they had to tell.

As someone diagnosed with cancer at 15, 31, and 36, I am now proud to be a breast cancer advocate and share my cancer stories with the world.

☆The mortality rate for Black women diagnosed with breast cancer is 42% higher than the comparable rate for White women.

Shonte (@shonte19) was well aware of disparities in breast cancer care, but that didn’t make navigating her own diagnosis any easier. After facing multiple barriers, she was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer.
