#GrowingUpDesi #BritishAsian #SoutheastAsian #Culture #Desi #POC #WOC #GirlsRunTheWorld #Disability #Creativity #Intersectionality | On Wednesday night, I attended #CutTheBakwaas at Rich Mix London, an ode to being unapologetically Brown and British, which showcased a colourful spectrum of the British Asian experience. [PLEASE EXCUSE MY CRAZY FACE!] It was a special #event by The Performance Lab and hosted by my dear friends The Other Box that was β€œfuelled by melanated art, music, performances, visual arts, a panel discussion, and chai with samosas..." We explored "the social, political and cultural narratives that articulate what it means to be British Asian in 2018…” They invited β€œartists from the South Asian diaspora to showcase their work across all disciplines, to celebrate and champion our communities, and to tell our stories in our own tongues.” β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€” I’m still buzzing and I LOVED it! β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€” Growing up Desi, I always struggled with the community (and many members of my extended family) because having a physical disability and studying Advertising & Brand Communication at university (and now working with the creative industries) I often felt isolated. However, I love my culture and events like this reaffirm how proud I am of my heritage and its people. As an active #IntersectionalFeminist, I loved how all the awesome women of colour ruled the event too. I only wish there were such #inclusive, empathetic, humanity-affirming, positive, creative, mind-opening, heart-melting, soul-searching, fun, lovesome, and tangibly rich (in every sense of the word) events like this when I was groaning up in the 1980’s and 1990’s. β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€” Also, it was fantastic to see my good friends Shahnaz and Luke there. β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€” Congrats to Divya (and The Performance Lab team) and my Desi Ranis Roshni + Leyya (of The Other Box) for creating and hosting a wonderful event, and thank you for the invite! I had an incredible time with incredible people at an incredible event. β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€” More of this, please! β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€” As my shero, Cindy Gallop, best said: β€œShared Values + Shared Action = Shared Profit (that’s financial profit and social profit).”
