What a brilliant first walk! 🚶‍♀️🎭

We had such a great time on the first of our three Salford walking tours, taking place as part of the Salford Centenary celebrations.

A huge thank you to our brilliant tour guide Emma Fox, who brought the history of the area to life as we made our way through Salford.

As part of the Salford Centenary celebrations, we’re delighted to be running a series of guided walking tours with the first one taking place on Thursday 15th October at 11am. Link to register is in our bio 🎟️

Led by local guide Emma Fox and supported by volunteers from the Salford Victoria Theatre Trust, these tours explore the people, places and stories that have shaped East Salford over the past 100 years, from Chapel Street and The Crescent to the banks of the River Irwell and the historic Victoria Theatre itself.

Whether you’re a lifelong resident, new to the area, or simply interested in local history, it’s a unique opportunity to see familiar streets through a new lens.

I had a lovely time yesterday afternoon with Emma Fox @showmemcr running our latest walking tour + writing workshop event for this year’s @mcrlitfest! The theme was “Brave Bold Women That History Forgot” - and, after I encouraged the group to see themselves as writers for the afternoon, dreaming, imagining and jotting down ideas to fill in history’s gaps (which are particular enormous when it comes to what women did) - we kicked off (!) at the National Football Museum @nationalfootballmuseum, where Emma told us about 19th century women’s football pioneer Nettie Honeyball and one of the game’s greatest players, Lily Parr, with her wicked left foot! We then walked to Sacred Trinity Church @sacredsalford, Salford’s oldest extant church, to first commemorate WW1 hero Edith Cavell, executed by the Germans in Belgium on Oct 12th 1915, and remembered on a memorial in the church grounds, before we headed inside for our first writing exercise, a little Word Cricket in these beautiful surroundings. From Sacred Trinity Emma lead us towards Manchester city centre, stopping at the plaque to Elizabeth Raffald, not only an 18th century cookbook writer but an entrepreneur who founded a cookery school and published the first trade directory of Manchester & Salford. And had 16 children, oh my!

Our tour took us next to Angel Meadows, which now looks like a park but was one of the most impoverished areas of the city, hit hard by the cholera epidemics in the 19th century and called by some “hell on earth”. Emma told us the story of Elizabeth Prout, who came to Manchester with a mission to help the poor and educate women so they might have better lives. From here, we took a short walk up a small hill to the fabulous @themarblearchmcr, pioneer of craft brewing, where, over tea & coffee rather than pints, we did our final writing exercise, writing drabbles (pieces exactly 100 words long) inspired by all the participants had seen, heard and imagined as we walked. Thanks so much to everyone who joined us, and to our wonderful Lit Fest volunteers! We are running the same event again on Oct 23rd - but it’s sold out, so you’ll have to wait til the next one :)

Honestly if these two do another you need to get booked on FAST.
Nothing like hearing about of a load of women who did INCREDIBLE things but barely got a mention in the history to light that fire 🔥

What an exciting way to learn about these exciting exhibitions and also take in the sights and sounds of Mcr. My pop-up exhibition “Jewellery from the Street” will be featured on this tour as well. On 17th July 1761 (265 years ago today!!) the Bridgewater Canal was opened from Worsley to Stretford and the first boat sailed over the stone aqueduct high above the river Irwell. It was described at the time as a ‘castle in the air’ and people came from far and wide to see this amazing engineering feat.

The price of coal in Manchester was halved overnight and the industrial revolution carried on apace. The Duke’s canal was then also extended to Runcorn where it met the river Mersey, providing a vital, reliable waterway between the two cities of Manchester and Liverpool, albeit on a circuitous ‘contour’ route.

265 years later, the canal is still here and so are we, for all your guiding needs - we have guides who can take you on walking tours, boat tours, cycle tours & coach tours so you can 'gongoozle*' and be part of the history of the Bridgewater canal

The downpour didn't put these hardy visitors off the Coal Canal and Cake tour on Saturday. Thankfully the sun came out and all was well inside St Mark's for a brew and Cake!

✨ WE MET A MAYOR ✨

A week ago we had the pleasure of meeting the Lord Mayor of Wirral Brian Kenny and his wife Helen Kenny. They kindly invited us and our fellow guides to Wallasey Town Hall to receive some certificates in honour of our dedication to promoting Wirral. Our qualification covers the whole of the Liverpool City Region which includes Wirral Peninsula and we certainly spent a lot of time training over there for our coach and art gallery exams!

We were treated to tea and biscuits (Jess certainly enjoyed the biscuits as she forgot to have breakfast!) in the private sitting room for the Lord Mayor. Lord Mayor Brian Kenny gave a lovely speech about what we did on our course and thanked us for helping to promote the area as a place of culture in the city region. We were also treated to a great tour of Wallasey Town Hall too! The building is lovely and has a few history gems inside which we are looking forward to sharing with you!
