- Can India’s rivers simply be connected to solve its water crisis?
In his latest article, United Rivers of India, Eklavya Prasad ( @watervagabonding ) takes a closer look at the renewed push for interlinking India’s rivers following recent remarks by Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
The article goes beyond the proposition to ask the questions that matter:
What is surplus water? How much water can actually be transferred? What happens to downstream communities and ecosystems?
And are our calculations robust enough to justify interventions of this scale?
This is not an argument against interlinking. It is a call to question, examine and scrutinize before we build.
Because, a proposition is not yet a project.
A flood is not necessarily a surplus.
And a river is not a pipeline.

Cribbing about poor infrastructure in rural areas is fine but one big advantage of living here is that there are no quick takeaways, no Swiggy, no Zomato, no fancy restaurants and so all meals are cooked at home. Eating alternatively - makki, bajri, juwar, nachni and wheat bhakris/ rotlas/roties with dollop of home made ghee, home grown 🌿 leafy vegetables and awaiting the forest bhajis this season covers up all other woes and more :-)

🌊 Water Realities: Reimagining Sustainable Futures

📅 10th–14th May, 2026
📍 Sambhaavnaa Institute for Public Policy, Kandbari, Tehsil Palampur, District Kangra, Himachal Pradesh

Resource Persons:
Manshi Asher

Jiten Yumnam

Across India, droughts and floods now coexist. Rivers no longer follow historical flows. Groundwater aquifers and springs are drying up faster than they can recharge, across diverse ecological zones. These transformations place disproportionate burdens on a wide range of communities, already facing social and economic marginalization.

Yet the “water crisis” is still framed as scarcity or mismanagement, masking deeper questions of justice, governance, and ecological change.

Activists and NGOs; young researchers and students (master’s onwards); environmental lawyers; or media persons wishing to report on the subject are welcome to apply.

Each Serai fellow found their own rhythm of work.
Some moved through the day with ease and sunlight, others settled into stillness and quiet.
Some filled their walls with colour; others kept a single notebook and a view of the trees.

The days shaped themselves
around books, brush pens, afternoon hush, and sudden bursts of laughter.
Studios emerged in corners, windows became invitations, and slow rituals gave form to the work.

Here is a glimpse into that rhythm.

Most evenings at Serai ended around the fireplace—with games of Snakes & Ladders, Sequence, and the occasional fiercely competitive round of Uno. The mood was light, the jokes flew easily, and the board game nights became their own kind of ritual—offering laughter, play, and a winding down that everyone looked forward to.

A leisurely breakfast turned unforgettable when Himalayan Griffons circled above. After breakfast (and forgetting to photograph it, of course), the group wandered into a meadow nearby. Some laid down in the sun, others chatted, read, or simply looked out at the mountains. Because rest and communion with nature are as much a part of Serai as deep work and conversation.

Far from city lights, the stars at @nomadgallu are always a treat. One night, the fellows stayed up past 2:45 a.m. watching the Leonid meteor showers streak across the sky. Huddled around a bonfire to beat the cold, they took turns pointing out constellations, guided by fellow Shripad’s gentle starmap lessons. Over multiple nights of stargazing, the skies never looked quite the same twice—each evening its own kind of quiet magic.
