‘25 Recap, Theme: Sustainable Wardrobe❕

I used to have such a bad shopping addiction, and particularly for fast fashion or mass produced (“trending”) clothing items. I felt pressures from both social media and the tattoo industry, where there’s an expectation to look a certain way for the approval of others. It’s embarrassing how many times I shopped via Princess Polly, Universal, ASOS etc… often buying things that I’d only wear once or twice.

Coming into 2025 I drastically cut down my wardrobe. We moved house and I wanted to be strict on only owning items I’d actually wear, plus make a commitment to pieces that could transition into every season.
I chose to be more selective when I thrifted, really judging the longevity of things in my closet. I started switching my higher ticket purchases to small labels and sustainable local brands, preferencing individual creators with better ethics behind them.

Did I still cave to buy a staple at Uniqlo now and then, or come home with an occasional impulse buy? Absolutely. But I still made a huge shift this year that I’m really proud of. Going into 2026 I’m going to cut those last few impulses and perhaps do another closet clean out.
Slow progress is okay ❕

I urge you to reflect on your wardrobes in the new year, and try not to default to sites like SHEIN or ASOS as your go to. There are so many sources for sustainable clothing, and at this point we’re all aware of how wasteful the fashion industry has become.

Happy new year and happy shopping 💋

Artist: Menna McAlpin @sibling.silver

Title: Surveillance Bouquet

Menna McAlpin is a jeweller and metalworker practising on Kaurna land, interested in the overlooked presence of everyday objects and their quiet roles in daily life.

Statement:
Surveillance Bouquet reflects on the erosion of privacy under late capitalism. By giving security cameras agency and arranging them like a bouquet, the work questions who is watching, what is being seen, and why. The cameras observe everything around them without clear purpose, highlighting the absurdity and omnipresence of surveillance.
