Looking west on Beacon Street in Boston, near the State House, 1980s.

These views show Beacon Street looking down the hill, just past the Massachusetts State House (the State House would be behind and to the left from this angle). The street to the right in the foreground is Joy Street, and Boston Common is to the left.

Ever since Beacon Hill was developed in the early 1800s, it has been a wealthy neighborhood, and given its location adjacent to the State House, it has been the home of a number of prominent politicians over the years. .

Looking up Washington Street from near Franklin Street, toward Old South Meeting, 1906.

These two photos were taken just a block away from the ones in this post. This particular view illustrates some of the changes that Washington Street has seen over the past century. Long before even the first photo was taken, Washington Street was once the only way in or out of Boston by land (hence, “one if by land, two if by sea,” with the land part referring to passing through here). However, subsequent landfill in the 19th century expanded Boston’s land area, and allowed for other routes in and out.

Today, this section of Washington Street is closed to most traffic, and is at the center of the Downtown Crossing shopping district. In that sense, not much has changed – 100 years ago, this area was also a major commercial district, although not many of the buildings survive today. The most prominent is the Old South Meeting House, which has stood at the corner of Washington and Milk Streets since 1729. A few other buildings on the right-hand side, both in front of and behind the church, still exist today, but everything in the foreground has significantly changed.

The Noah Lincoln House at the corner of North Bennet and Salem Streets in the North End, around 1898.

Also known as the Avis House, the Noah Lincoln House was built around 1716, just a short distance down Salem Street from where Old North Church would be built only a few years later. It was modified somewhat by Noah Lincoln in the early 1800s, and the third floor was added. According to a turn-of-the-century book, it was still standing in 1899, but was probably demolished soon after and replaced with the present building.
