Classes, workshops, community practices, events… I’ve already lost count by now. I just know I’ve poured a lot of sweat, and heart into this. :)

Not that numbers are what matter most, but every now and then, they tell a story. A story of growth, of showing up, of a community slowly taking shape.

Thank you for being part of it. Your support means more than you know.

With awe, love & gratitude,
D.

Petrit Halilaj’s @xixellojme exhibition at the hamburger Bahnhof closed with a twinkling marrionnette-opera last weekend. What struck me and stayed was the deft design of the central room, made to be enlivened by the performance. The backdrop, pieces of the set, and sloping qilim-seating all held their own as exhibition elements, keeping the space from feeling sparse, a danger in this kind of dual-use. Catherine Nichols’ @catherinenichols567 long curatorial conversation with Halilaj is palpable in thoughtful choices of works, and recurrent motifs from his oeuvre embedded throughout.

Halilaj’s delightful story of the rooster and fox who celebrate their love in Syringana against all odds, offers a bridge across tradition and equality, for those who see it. In evoking Albanian wedding songs for a queer ceremony, these poles come together in soft, cautious communion. It reminds me of Silvi Naçi’s @silvi.naci tender qilims, handwoven by veteran weavers in Shkodra. The two pieces we showed in ‘Wrapped in the Shadow of Freedom’ (Prishtina, 2024), both made in conversation with Deshira Maja, hold memories from Naci’s life in LA, with their partner and two cats, their chosen family inscribed into a quotidian object, hallmark of Balkas households.

Forging paths between queerness and tradition—sometimes in the form of confused or subborn parents—is often like a dance, you get some floor and then you open some to them, laborious but bears beautiful fruits, caveated by the acknowledgement of many violent circumstances like the urging of Halilaj’s trailer. When there is reciprocal intention, however fragile, it can be a process of repairing rupture, of generating warm in these fragmented times.
