It was the hottest day of the year. 42 degrees.
Brave guests crossed Berlin and gathered together for a fascinating evening, for an artist talk with Sima Levin, and to listen and ask questions about topics such as instability, belonging, and migration, and to reflect on the longing for the Great Mother, whose voice is heard from the depths of the abyss of oblivion.

The words “instability” and “abyss” are associated with the theories and writings of both Nietzsche and Jung. While Nietzsche warns against complete identification with the monsters of the depths and becoming one of them, Jung encourages to embrace the shadow, and perhaps to discover hidden aspects that influence us in the most fundamental way.

In every salon, I share a chapter from the history of Jewish salons.
This time, however, I didn’t talk about one of Berlin’s salonnières. Instead, we traveled from Berlin to Hollywood to visit Salka Viertel’s salon.

How did Salka Viertel’s private home in Santa Monica become one of the most influential salons in Hollywood during the 1930s and 1940s?
Salka Viertel was an actress, screenwriter, and Jewish immigrant who turned her home into a gathering place for refugees, artists, and intellectuals who fled the rise of the Nazis, throughout the war, and afterward, during the persecution of anyone suspected of being a communist in the USA. Among her guests were Thomas Mann, Bertolt Brecht, Greta Garbo, and more.

Behind the dinner parties, home-cooked meals, and conversations lay a social mission: Selka used her connections in Hollywood to help opponents of the Nazi regime and Jews to escape. But after the war, in the USA of all places, she became the subject of FBI investigations and persecution and was blacklisted during the era of the Red Scare.
Salka’s Salon became a home, a refuge, and a battleground for political and cultural struggle.
As Thomas Mann wrote: "What is the meaning of foreign and homeland when the homeland becomes foreign, and the foreign becomes the homeland?"

Sima Levin is here.

We’re in for a pleasant, warm week of intense work in the studio.

After she settled in and rested, I invited Sima to join me for an online lecture by the artist (one of the best) Assi Meshulam on “Human Sacrifice in Pagan and early jewish Cultures of the Middle East.”

I listened to most of the lecture while riding the U-Bahn between Friednau and Friedrichshain. Sima listened at home, sketching Assi in her sketchbook.
Although infants are no longer being sacrificed to gods, the theme of sacrifice, or the surrender of the self in the face of a vision or belief, even to the point of extreme violent acts, remains deeply embedded in human culture. (It must be said that this is not unrelated to the influences of patriarchy.)

For this week in Berlin, Sima brings with her reflections on instability and on *The Great Mother Calls Me from the Abyss*.

In the Salon, we will discuss how all of this relates to instability and the consequences of accelerated daily change.
