Expressive, material-led paintings rooted in the landscape of West Penwith, worked from a studio near Cape Cornwall on the Atlantic coast.

Artist of the Month // October
Simon Hartles

Simon is a Cornwall-based artist creating expressive, material-led paintings rooted in the landscape of West Penwith.

Working from his studio near Cape Cornwall, Simon responds to the changing light, weather and raw geology of the Atlantic coast. His paintings don't attempt to reproduce the landscape; instead, they translate its energy, atmosphere and sense of place through colour, gesture and texture.

Clay, fire ash, oxides, pigments and other natural materials are worked directly into the surface, building paintings that are physical as well as visual. Layers are scraped, built, broken back and reworked, creating surfaces that shift between the atmospheric and the almost sculptural.

At the heart of the work are ideas of identity, belonging and resilience — a response to a landscape that has been shaped by both natural forces and generations of human life.

Simon has taught Fine Art in London and Cornwall since 2003 and is a member of the Newlyn Society of Artists. He received the Refresh Art Award for Art of Our Times in 2021, and his paintings are held in private collections in the UK and internationally.

I'm excited to introduce you to my latest work. A collection of jugs I have made for an upcoming group exhibition at @morvahschoolhousegallery titled Under The Hawthorne Tree. 12/10-26/10 11-16:00
I'm over the moon with how rich the colours have come through with these pots, drawing out the warm tones of the terracotta clay and the autumn/winter tones of Oxide slips and dark sgraffito fine lining adding some interesting textures. There were definitely some surprises when they came out of the final firing, but good ones this time!
The show will include work by @claire.armitage.artist @simon_hartles @lucy_hartles @under_the_hawthorntree @olivia.beckwitholver and myself.

Here’s the third of the 3 ‘phases’ in our spring show ‘Longya – exploring an uncommon place’, as described by our guest curator, Dr Matt Retallick. (‘Longya’ is the Cornish word for ‘belong’)

The first two phases are in the lower gallery. (See previous posts) They concern the figure in Cornish art and the ‘mysterious and unknown’. Of the third phase, in the upper gallery, Matt said;

‘…we arrive at that I will rather sweepingly call a selection of minimal abstractions, works that, despite their apparent economy, seemed to me to remain deeply rooted to the complexities of the earth here. They capture the vibrancy of landscape, in both physical and perceptual terms; the rhythms, the ebb and flow of the natural world, and offer a profound connection to place.’

The show runs until 4.30 on Easter Monday 21st April. Don’t miss it!

On my first look around Longya I was drawn to these delicate evocations of land and sea - the very things that brought me to Cornwall 8 years ago, to #westpenwith in particular, and that inspired my #paintings and #ceramics. This part of #Cornwall is surounded by the sea - when I stand on Bartinney I can see the coast for nearly 360 degrees, from Pendeen light round to Marazion. It has exerted an attraction on people for hundreds, thousands of years: a strange sense of 'coming home', or 'belonging'. The #nsanewlyn exhibition LONGYA at #tremeneeregallery @tremenheeresculpturegardens, carefully curated by @matt_retallick brings out that quality special to this unique part of the county.

Making an exhibition of myself!

Decided to rework an old piece, one that I’d struggled to resolve on numerous occasions. Sometimes my work feels easy and comes together relatively quickly and other times they sit and I stare, then I remove it from sight and revisit at a later date. The ash on this piece is from the burnt remnants of work that never made it this far. The colour palette is the same as my previous post. I think this one might be a keeper. What do you think?
