We finished off our season on Jethou a few weeks ago with spot on the podium in St Tropez, and with all three of the top boats within 2 points. After the disappointment of losing our new rig half way through the season, it was good to finish on a high note and we look forward to getting new rig mark II this winter 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧

After a nearly 20 year career representing New Zealand, @emiratesteamnz sailor and Olympic medallist @simonvanvelthooven has today announced his retirement from professional sport. Marking the end of a remarkable sporting career that redefined what it means to be a high-performance athlete.
Simon joined Emirates Team New Zealand ahead of the 2017 America’s Cup campaign in Bermuda, bringing his background as an Olympic track cyclist to a sport that had never seen pedal power before. As one of the team’s original cyclors, he helped pioneer the innovative grinding system that powered the AC50 catamaran. A breakthrough that became central to Team New Zealand’s Cup victory. Simon raced in 3x America’s Cup winning campaigns (2017, 2021 and 2024) with ETNZ, contributing his strength, experience, and technical insight that cemented the team’s dominance on the world stage.

Before joining ETNZ, Simon was already a world-class track cyclist, representing New Zealand at the 2012 London Olympics, where he claimed a bronze medal in the men’s keirin - New Zealand’s first sprint cycling Olympic medal, along with multiple World Championship and Commonwealth Games medals. He also spent several seasons competing in Japan’s prestigious professional Keirin competition, the first Kiwi to do so. His power and precision on the bike made him one of the country’s most formidable sprinters.

Congrats on a remarkable and memorable career Simon - we wish you and your family all the best on the next chapter ahead.

Sailing in Porto Cervo rarely disappoints and so it was for this iteration of the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup.

On Jethou we were due to have our new mast, and with it a whole new suit of sails, but shipping damage put pay to that. We soldiered on with the old kit and still had our moments in the sun. Well done team.

Congratulations to the new World Champions Django. It can take a while to get a new boat up to speed but they are already a formidable team.

Back to the same waters this week for the 52 Super Series before joining Jethou again in 10 days for the season closer in beautiful St Tropez.

The latest @thepistetake episode is a double header with @perkoperkins with a nostaglic look back at the legendary Australian (and temporary Russian) sprinter's career.

Shane and his family have always been great supporters of our business, even way back in 2006 when we started as a Track Cycling News and Photography website, so here are some photos Shane sent us back in 2010 when we did a feature on his time at the JKA Keirin School in Japan.
