📑 Just capturing a very regular Thursday night over here. We “school” Monday through Thursday and use Friday as our Adventure Club day where we visit trails or parks with friends. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Honestly, though, I’ve had to “unschool” myself and my boys - meaning I want to lose the thought process that school starts at this hour and ends at this hour. Yes, we have a certain checklist each day that I would like to accomplish, but learning never stops. School is always in session. And school doesn’t just mean a worksheet or an assignment. School is learning to build things with their Dad. School is learning how to be a man of self-control. School is helping me with the dishwasher or putting away laundry. We are developing the full human from the inside out (all by God’s grace!!). ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

But as far as the checklist part of our schooling, I never want my boys to be lacking in the records department, so I try to be intentional about documenting what we do each day. Did I fall asleep at this table trying to write it all down last night? Maybe … but it’s also fun to look back at what you’ve actually accomplished! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

And thank you to my sweet friend @simply.learning.together for the planning sheets that I use each month! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

I'm not much of a non-fiction reader, so I'm posting this for some accountability. 🙈 Thanks to inspiration from Jamie with @simply.learning.together I'm excited to read Know and Tell. Narration will be new for my boys this homeschool year, so any and all advice are welcome!

And since my oldest seems to be following in my footsteps with his feelings toward a certain subject 🙃, I'm interested to glean all I can from Help! My Kid Hates Writing. We've loved the @bravewriterofficial literature singles we've done, so I have high hopes for this!

Let me know what's on your non-fiction TBR and if you've read either of these! #tbr #readersgonnaread #homesweethomeschool

I absolutely love mornings like these. Reading a good book and taking rabbit trails to learn about things in the book. ❤️ #courageofsarahnoble #readaloud

Christopher Columbus but make it hands on! 👐🏻

We are using American History Through Picture Books by @simply.learning.together and added a craft. I looked it up online and asked AI how to make it. 😆

Here's what we actually did!
🔸 For the background, we used a cardboard that I cut it to size from a box from Costco. Then, my daughter painted it dark blue and using crumpled aluminum foil, she dabbed it with lighter blue, then white, then some dark blue color. Then, she traced the land (America, Spain, and part of Africa)
🔸 To make the land, we used equal part of shaving cream, liquid glue, and green paint. Then, add to the tracing of the land. Be generous because they'll form mountains and valleys when dry!
🔸 To make the ships, we used the cap of bottled water, painting them brown.
🔸 For the masts, we used toothpicks cut to size. We wrote the names of the ships on the sail, then glue gunned it to the mast. Then, glue gunned the whole thing to the ships.
🔸 For extra, we added dried moss, that I bought long time ago from a Dollar Tree, to the land.

That's it! Let the land dry, then have fun!

We kicked off American history with picture books! 📚

We used a guide from @simply.learning.together and we added extras. 🫠

Here are the extras we did!
📖 My daughter read Who Was Leif Erikson. This book is not part of the guide, but I borrowed it from the library just to compare. She picked it up from our library book bin and said she wanted to read it! She read all the books as independent reading.
📽️ We watched random YouTube videos about the Vikings (to give an overview) and Leif Erikson.
🗓️ The guide gives a template for a timeline but I decided to get the history timeline notebook from @schoolnest
🗺️ For map work, I printed a free map online, and we traced where Leif Erikson went.
🖌️ We made a Viking ship for craft! I looked it up online and used a free template from @art.is.basic from TPT.

That's it!
