Join Lilith and @sinister_wisdom to celebrate 100 years of publishing with a special evening of Jewish lesbian and feminist poetry with Irena Klepfisz, Robin Becker, and Julie R Enszer.

What does it mean to be Jewish in this moment? And a feminist? And a lesbian? Klepfisz, Becker, and Enszer have been thinking about and exploring these questions in their work for decades. Join us on Tuesday, November 17, 6 pm, at Congregation Beit Simchat Torah (@cbst_nyc) for this intergenerational reading and conversation to nurture our spirits for continued work in the world.

RSVP at 🔗 in bio.

Cosponsored by @thebcrw, @jewishlanguageproject, @@cbst_nyc, and @yetzirahpoets.

Such a wonderful opening, pure magic! Meeting lesbian artists, poets, and writers of all ages and backgrounds. Of course, I cried during the poetry reading, especially when Happy was on stage and spoke about community. It’s a bittersweet concept, as some dear members of my community have been in prison since September for standing up for us.

Tee Corinne’s mirrored photo series, Yantras of Womanlove, was the first lesbian art I encountered while desperately searching for my reflection in my university library. I fell in love with this series, and I think it influenced my work a lot. It’s such a joy to be in the same exhibition as Tee and everyone else.

Thank you, Bell Pitkin and Juno from Dyke+ Arthaus, for this exhibition celebrating fifty years of lesbian art from Sinister Wisdom.

50 Years of Lesbian Art: Sinister Wisdom’s Creative Legacies opens this Saturday, October 17th 5-8PM @dykearthaus @sinister_wisdom ❤️‍🔥

❣️On View October 17th-December 20th, 2026
❣️Open Hours ~ Saturday & Sunday 12-4PM

50 Years of Lesbian Art: Sinister Wisdom’s Creative Legacies brings together visual artists who have contributed to Sinister Wisdom, A Multicultural Lesbian Literary & Art Journal, across its 50-year history. Founded in 1976 by Catherine Nicholson and Harriet Desmoines, Sinister Wisdom emerged as a vital platform for lesbian-feminists to explore their experiences, share dreams, and build community through creative expression. Since its inception, the journal has offered space for authors, activists, and artists whose work has historically been excluded from mainstream publications and institutions.

Visual artists such as Tee Corinne, JEB (Joan E. Biren), Barbara Hammer, Jean Weisinger, Laura Aguilar, Lenore Chinn, Alison Bechdel, and so many others have contributed to the journal’s powerful visual legacy— claiming space for lesbian identity in the arts and shaping a shared cultural archive.

This exhibition honors that legacy by showcasing works spanning the journal’s five decades of publication through a multigenerational lens. It brings together artists from the early years of Sinister Wisdom with radical voices of the 1990s and contemporary artists who continue to expand the horizons of lesbian art today.

In celebrating the journal’s 50th anniversary in 2026, this exhibition seeks not only to honor the artists who have contributed to this legacy, but also to inspire future generations and affirm the continuing presence, and necessity, of lesbian art in our collective cultural landscape.

Our cover is a photo taken by Andy Antezana of the @bayarealesbianarchives refrigerator. There’s a great essay by BALA volunteer Ash Waltz with more of Andy’s photos about BALA’s history. Raise your hand if you know a lesbian archive that started in someone’s house!
