Nature of Being
Curated by Marc Dennis

September 17 - October 24, 2026

Opening Reception: Thursday, September 17, 6-8pm

HARPER’S
534 West 22nd Street, New York, NY 10011

Nature of Being brings together a group of eight painters whose work considers our place within the natural world - not simply as observers of it, but as participants in something larger, older, and often unknowable.

Across the exhibition, nature becomes a space of refuge, memory, transformation, mystery, and connection. Forests, water, flora, organic forms, atmosphere, and imagined environments function as more than scenery; they become psychological and emotional territories through which ideas of identity, solitude, belonging, and consciousness can unfold.

The exhibition suggests that our relationship to nature is both deeply intimate and fundamentally mysterious. We recognize ourselves in its cycles of growth and decay, beauty and danger, order and chaos, while remaining aware that the natural world exists far beyond us and without us.

Nature of Being explores that tension: the desire to feel rooted in the world while confronting the strangeness of simply being alive within it. Collectively, the paintings ask what it means to belong - not only to a place, but to the larger living system of which we are an inseparable part.

Artists in the exhibition:

Steve Cope @stevecope50

FIERMAN MEMORY STROLL WITH THE ONE AND ONLY SCOTT COVERT! 2 venue show in fall 2017 at FIERMAN and @situations.us

SITUATIONS + FIERMAN are pleased to announce a two-gallery presentation of artist Scott Covert (b. 1954, Edison, NJ) entitled The Dead Supreme. For the last 32 years, Covert has travelled throughout the United States and Europe visiting the graves of cultural icons. Covert’s process utilizes the cemetery as his studio as he embeds layers of names and dates within coats of paint and oil stick. In addition to this exhibition, Covert is also prominently featured in Club 57: Film, Performance, and Art in the East Village, 1978–1983, opening at the Museum of Modern Art on October 31.

In 1976, Covert began his studies at the San Francisco Art Institute, only to drop out and turn to acting. Returning to New York in 1977, Covert engaged with various Off Broadway theater companies, such as La Mama Theater, and later, co-founded Playhouse 57 at Club 57 in 1979. Throughout this formative period, Covert was immersed in the ferment of downtown bohemian spheres and spent time with numerous legendary protagonists such as the writer and actress Cookie Mueller, as well as poet and artist Rene Ricard. Both Ricard and Mueller encouraged and championed Covert’s work.

In 1981, Covert gave up acting and began developing his largely self-taught art practice. He began using human skulls as material and Cookie Mueller wrote about these early works in the Saturday Review and in her regular column for Details magazine. Following the reprinting of the writings in a South African magazine, Covert was invited to show in a gallery in Cape Town in 1985. Covert conceived of a new body of work that would critically engage the inhumanity of institutionalized segregation. His subversive contribution would pay tribute via grave rubbings of accomplished African Americans, such as Frederick Douglass, Malcolm X, and Harriet Tubman. When working with the headstone of Florence Ballard — one of the founding members of the Supremes — Covert began to add various colors and layering to the rubbings. It is this “Dead Supreme” that spawned Covert’s Monument Painting series.
