What a lovely weekend back at my alma mater, @ithacacollege!! 💙💛 A lot is going on at IC right now 😬 but it was good to be back and see the folks & places I love.

1 - Back on campus in my NY colors! Knicks in five!
2 - Had the utmost pleasure to meet with the President of IC, Dr. La Jerne Terry Cornish! 🫶🏿
3 - I returned to campus to speak with the BOLD scholars! An incredible group of students! I woulda def tried to be a BOLD Scholar as well if this was on campus when I was there!
4 - Back in my favorite place, Taste of Thai! They done added CATFISH as a protein you can choose. Baby, that catfish massaman curry was so good!
5 - So good seeing @trompo.di & @faridapartyof_1! 💙💛
6 - @ejota_ny and I went up together and realized we hadn’t been on campus together since 2008! In this picture we are very cold as it was in the 40s and feeling in the 20s! Oh, Ithaca!

When the axle in your car snaps while road tripping around upstate New York, you do the only thing you know how to do.

I first met @jarredkibler this spring at Action Bronson’s dinner series in NYC.

Fast-forward a few months, I’m sleeping on his couch, eating at The Park Inn, and showing him how we do things over here at Pasta Monsta.

First time in the Finger Lakes. Definitely not the last.

It’s the combination of latitude, lakes, terrain and a long growing season. Together, these conditions give grapes time to develop while retaining freshness and acidity. It’s this combination that gives the Finger Lakes its edge.

Grüner may be at home in Austria, but it’s certainly not staying there.

The Finger Lakes is one of the places where I’ve really come to appreciate what the grape can do — and my own Finger Lakes Grüner story has unfolded over three years, three wineries and three different lakes.

It started in late summer 2024, on our first trip to the Finger Lakes, at Dr. Konstantin Frank.

Dr. Frank is one of the region’s original wineries, and their Grüner Veltliner is still the best Grüner I’ve had in the Finger Lakes. I actually just opened the bottle I brought home from that trip the other week — and it held up beautifully.

That visit also helped me finally understand something I’d been getting wrong for years: Grüner and Gewürztraminer are not the same thing. 😂 Tasting them side by side made the difference much clearer, and I realized pretty quickly which one I preferred.

Then in fall 2025, we discovered 20 Deep and their Grüner, Plot Twist.

The name is pretty fitting because Grüner can be a little unexpected, and this one was no exception. I still get grapefruit, lemon and lime on the nose, but on the palate I found more ginger spice than the white pepper I usually associate with Grüner.

Delicious enough that we brought two bottles home.

Then came Six Eight Winery in spring 2026, where we tasted two Grüner Veltliners made in different fermentation vessels: one in concrete and one in clay.

The concrete version had honey on the nose, less funk and more texture. The clay version was funkier and more apple-driven, and reminded me a little of a Norman cider.

Three wineries. Three years. Three lakes. And three very different expressions of the same grape.

And that’s what I’ve come to love about exploring Grüner in the Finger Lakes. The grape has its recognizable characteristics — bright acidity, citrus, spice — but the lake, vineyard and winemaking choices can take it in completely different directions.

Plus, all three are places I’d happily recommend for the tasting experience itself. The wines are only part of why I enjoyed stopping at each one.
