OPEN CALL: Sixi International Artist-in-Residence Project 2027 | China 🇨🇳

Sixi Museum is inviting artists from all disciplines and cultural backgrounds to apply for the Sixi International Artist-in-Residence Project 2027, offering four artists the opportunity to spend three months developing new work in Nanjing, China.

The 2027 Open Call invites proposals responding to one of two themes:

1. Flux and Imprints: Contemporary Echoes of Migration History
Exploring migration, cultural reconstruction, memory, identity, colonial histories, archives, oral histories, and personal narratives within contemporary and global contexts.

2. Folds of Text: Cross-Media Intertextuality and Intervention
Exploring “text” beyond the written word through interdisciplinary approaches spanning literature, linguistics, music and sound, visual art, and other media.

Selected artists will receive accommodation and studio space, round-trip travel, visa support, insurance, technical and residency assistance, translation support, and a material allowance. Residents will participate in artist talks, workshops, and open studios, with the opportunity to present their work in an exhibition at the end of the residency.

Residency duration: 3 months
Spring residency: March – May 2027
Autumn residency: September – November 2027

The Sixi Museum international AiR project provides living and working space in Nanjing, as well as financial and administrative support. Accommodation’s either an apartment in the city center, or a studio loft in the outskirts. Sixi covers visa and travel expenses and provides a materials allowance. Other nice-to-haves include airport pickup, personal assistance (sim card, local maps), translation services where necessary, and an orientation/welcome dinner.

On July 26, the opening reception for SIXI MUSEUM’s group exhibition *The Second Skin: From Flesh to Interstellar* took place.
Thank you to every guest and friend who joined us in this dialogue on skin, perception, and the complex resonance between the environment and the body. My sincere thanks to SIXI MUSEUM, the museum director, and curator Zheng Shu for their support, which made it possible for these works to be presented here.
Looking back, I realize that I have always been searching for a second reality. If the first reality is composed of matter, the body, space, and time, then the second is formed by spirit, consciousness, dreams, and other intangible forces that quietly shape us.
They remain unseen, yet they truly exist.
I think of myself as a conduit for translation, while AI is the medium through which information becomes visible. Many of us may have experienced a moment when we suddenly felt a profound connection with the world—a realization that we are connected to the greater cosmos and belong to a vaster field of existence.
The journey from flesh to the stars may not require a distant departure. Deep within our bodies and consciousness, a path to the cosmos may have always been there.

At the opening, the museum director spoke about SIXI MUSEUM’s growth and dedication over the past three years, as well as the curatorial vision behind *The Second Skin*. The environment does not exist apart from us. It is like a second skin, extending from the most intimate realm of the flesh to the farthest reaches of interstellar space.

“The second skin” reminds me that the boundaries of being human have never been fixed. We live within our physical bodies, and within a larger environment shaped by technology, information, and imagination. Our bodies are connected to nature, our consciousness to the cosmos, while technology is becoming an extension of our perception.

𝐒𝐈𝐗𝐈 𝐌𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐮𝐦 is delighted to announce our thematic group exhibition 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑺𝒆𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒅 𝑺𝒌𝒊𝒏: 𝑭𝒓𝒐𝒎 𝑭𝒍𝒆𝒔𝒉 𝒕𝒐 𝑰𝒏𝒕𝒆𝒓𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒍𝒍𝒂𝒓, opening on July 28 2026.

The classical narrative of nature as a bountiful mother has evolved beyond symbiosis into profound, intricate resonance. Humanity yearns to break free from earthly constraints toward the unknown cosmic, yet our bodies and lives perpetually breathe and fluctuate within material surroundings. These environments form humanity’s vast outer skin, intertwining our physical boundaries and inner selves. Humans and nature have never truly been apart.

Centered on the core metaphor of skin to frame human-environment relations, this exhibition gathers eight artists from China, the United Kingdom, Germany, Poland and Egypt.

Together, they examine how the environment acts as a medium enveloping existence, emotion and social shifts, reflecting modern living conditions and the vitality of the human spirit.

Starting with corporeality, the artists measure nature through direct physical contact with primeval forests. They root identity and historical memory within alien soils, interrogate industrial landscapes of modernity and engage metaphysical deliberations on being amid shifting time and technology, ultimately arriving at futuristic ecological visions. Layer upon layer of this symbolic skin accumulates and thickens, stretching all the way to cosmic stardust.

𝐒𝐈𝐗𝐈 𝐌𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐮𝐦 invites you to experience this expansive, mutable, agentic ”second skin“ in the gallery. Witness the mutual remembrance and co-formation of humans and nature, and touch the boundless possibilities spanning matter and algorithms, flesh and stardust.

Nell’ambito della sua residenza presso il Sixi Art Museum di Nanchino, Maria Positano ha presentato Soft Armour: Matter, Memory, Release, un workshop dedicato all’esplorazione del rapporto tra protezione, vulnerabilità e trasformazione.

Partendo dalla sua ricerca sulle armature storiche, dalle tradizioni europee del XVIII secolo alle brigantine della dinastia Qing, l’artista ha guidato i partecipanti nella realizzazione di calchi di parti del proprio corpo, esplorando il delicato equilibrio tra vulnerabilità e forza, cura e difesa.

Il percorso si è concluso con un’azione performativa collettiva: i calchi associati alla propria “forza” sono stati immersi in acqua e lasciati dissolvere, trasformando il gesto della perdita in un momento simbolico di rilascio e trasformazione. I partecipanti hanno invece conservato il calco della parte più vulnerabile, riletta attraverso un processo di attenzione, ascolto e cura.

As part of her residency at the Sixi Art Museum in Nanjing, Maria Positano presented Soft Armour: Matter, Memory, Release, a workshop exploring the relationship between protection, vulnerability, and transformation.

Drawing on her research into historical armour, from 18th-century European traditions to Qing dynasty brigandine forms, the artist guided participants in creating casts of selected body parts, reflecting on the delicate balance between vulnerability and strength, care and defence.

The workshop concluded with a collective performative action: casts associated with participants’ perceived “strength” were immersed in water and left to dissolve, transforming the act of loss into a symbolic moment of release and transformation. Participants instead kept the cast representing their more vulnerable part, reinterpreted through a process of attention, care, and making.

Maria Positano conclude la sua residenza presso il Sixi Art Museum di Nanjing con una serie di lavori che raccolgono gli esiti di una ricerca dedicata al rapporto tra corpo, identità e protezione. Le opere sono state presentate al pubblico il 7 giugno in occasione dell’Open Studio finale.

Nato da uno studio comparato delle armature storiche orientali e occidentali, il progetto riflette sulle forme di difesa che costruiamo per attraversare il mondo. L’armatura viene riletta non come semplice oggetto di protezione, ma come spazio di tensione tra vulnerabilità e resistenza, tra ciò che custodiamo e ciò che scegliamo di mostrare.

Utilizzando il proprio corpo come matrice, Maria Positano realizza strutture indossabili attraverso materiali quotidiani e processi manuali che diventano parte integrante della ricerca stessa. In questi lavori, fragilità e protezione, dimensione intima e spazio esterno coesistono, dando forma a una ricerca che proseguirà e troverà ulteriore sviluppo nella dimensione performativa della prossima mostra di Maria presso il Sixi Art Museum.

Maria Positano concludes her residency at the Sixi Art Museum in Nanjing with a series of works that bring together the outcomes of a research project focused on the relationship between body, identity, and protection. The works were presented to the public on June 7 during the residency’s final Open Studio.

Developed through a comparative study of Eastern and Western historical armor, the project reflects on the forms of defense we construct to move through the world. Armor is reinterpreted not simply as an object of protection, but as a space of tension between vulnerability and resilience, between what we preserve and what we choose to reveal.

Using her own body as a model, Maria Positano creates wearable structures from everyday materials through labor-intensive processes that become an integral part of the work itself. Within these works, fragility and protection, the intimate and the external coexist, giving shape to a research project that will continue to evolve and find further development in the performative dimension of Maria’s upcoming exhibition at the Sixi Art Museum.
