In this monumental 30-by-20-foot patchwork, I transform discarded indigenous African textiles into a powerful narrative of rebirth, resilience, and revival. Each fragment carries a memory, finding new purpose through unity and creative reconstruction. By reimagining these materials, I celebrate African textile heritage while exploring materiality, freedom, fashion, and sustainability. This work is a testament to the beauty of renewal, demonstrating how what society discards can be reclaimed to create something extraordinary, meaningful, and enduring.

I’m thrilled to be displaying this piece at the San Jose Museum of Quilts and Textiles for ‘Soft Structures, The Female Body as Labor and Resistance’

This piece intertwines images I took of my younger sister (2010s) with a photo of my mother as a child (1970s).

Approx. 29 x 18 inches, custom framed 34 x 23 inches.

A hand-woven photo textile, from cotton twill & virgin wool.

I’m thrilled to be displaying this piece at the San Jose Museum of Quilts and Textiles for ‘Soft Structures, The Female Body as Labor and Resistance’

This piece intertwines an old photo of my mother as a child (1970s) with images I took of my younger sister (2010s). The series celebrates two of the most important women in my life and the influence of familial female relationships on my textile work as a whole. Please see slide 8 for more details on the larger body of work on display from Oct. 1, 2026 - January 10, 2027.

Soft Structures: The Female Body as Labor and Resistance examines the female experience through textile art, emphasizing work about women’s bodies, labor, and resistance. This exhibition brings together contemporary and historical female artists working with quilts, wearables, sculptures, mixed media, photography, hand weaving, and textile painting.

So excited to announce that I will have some work on display at the Soft Structures show at the San Jose Museum of Quilts and Textiles, opening Oct 2nd! One of my pieces, which is pictured in the background of this poster and in the last slide (titled "The love hasn't gone forever, it's just different"), includes 6 cloth dolls made by my great grandma Leta Duda, "GG", as well as some of her sewing tags. I'd like to think I've inherited some part of my knack for sewing from her. In a show themed around women's textile arts which are so often viewed as simply "crafty", I feel very proud to be able to honor her work in a museum setting. These skills are so generational. Check it out, San Jose! Wish I could attend the opening ❤️ thank you to Anna Snyder for curating and including me in this wonderful exhibition!
