The first major winter storm of the season is underway today, with snow falling in Montana as the moisture from former Hurricane Rachel meets an arctic front in the northern Rockies. Follow me @imlukesnow for the most accurate pow predictions and get the @opensnow app for the best weather info, and keep reading for the details.

Snow is already piling up in central Montana today as this unique weather setup, combining moisture from a former Hurricane with arctic air, continues to develop in the northern Rockies. As the cold front continued to push south, rain will turn to snow at lower elevations throughout the day in Saturday, with heavy snow continuing through Sunday afternoon, followed by another wave Sunday night.

The resorts in this region should see 10 to 20 inches, but above 8k feet 2 to 3 feet is possible. The snow will make its way into southwestern Montana and even Idaho and Wyoming as well, but the coldest air will remain north so accumulations will be less. Still, 6 to 12 in is likely in southwest Montana.

The upper level low responsible for the colder and northern part of this storm will close off and stalk over the southwest, keeping the subtropical moisture over the region for several days. Eventually, it will bring in some cooler air and deliver some high elevation snow to both Utah and Colorado next week. We’ll have to wait and see how those pieces come together before we know how much snow will fall.

120 straight months of skiing. It started on Labor Day 2016 at Showdown and the picture made it on ABC’s Good Morning America. Managed to ski through a torn Achilles suffered at Hood Meadows. So many ski areas, so much backcountry, so much powder, so many people and dogs. Here’s to 120 more.

Took a break from the computer for a quick skin up the mountain yesterday. Not a ton of snow but nice to get out on the skis again. Thanks @skigd for making the most out of one of the worst winters I can remember. Hoping to get good spring days in and crossing my fingers that next year brings an actual winter! #skiing #backcountryskiing #skitouring #skimontana #springtime

Are the cheese fries at Great Divide superior to fine Italian cuisine? According to at least one Olympian, yep.

“Don’t go alone”

That’s good advice.

On the mountain...and after an accident.

Things get complicated fast, and trying to handle it all yourself usually makes it harder.
