A quiet discovery in the gulch.

During steep-slope wattle removal in Pōhakuokalā, long time Kula land steward Joe Imhoff — working as part of the conservation contracting crew from Skyline Hawai‘i, a team he trained and manages — came across something unexpected: a remnant grove of native ‘āweoweo shrubs that survived the wildfire.

Nestled into steep walls where deer browsing and heavy flame didn’t reach, these resilient plants persisted on their own. Because our #WipeOutWattle crews are trained in native plant identification and grounded in place-based ecological awareness, Joe recognized the shrubs immediately and documented the find. He then collected limited specimens and seeds to support responsible study and propagation.

Since then, KCWA interns and volunteers have been working in our nursery to germinate the next generation of these plants — guided by the principle that restoration should honor what the land itself is trying to hold onto.

We see this discovery as both a sign of native resilience and a testament to careful stewardship: when crews move slowly, know what to look for, and enter the landscape with respect, the watershed can reveal what is still present and worth protecting.

KCWA is now consulting with botanists and cultural practitioners as we continue documenting and learning from this grove. We look forward to sharing more in the coming months.

Restoration makes space.
Native resilience endures.
And hope grows.

Mahalo to our partners at @hydroflask for funding this essential work!

Maui's forests are more than beautiful—they're essential.

Less than 30% of Maui's native ecosystems remain. These forests capture and filter our freshwater, shelter endangered species, and hold deep cultural significance. It's not too late to help restore them.

Through our Rooted in Aloha reforestation initiative with Skyline Conservation, we planted 5,000 native trees in 2024—koa, sandalwood, ʻōhiʻa, and more—to breathe life back into Haleakalā's slopes.

Here's how you can make a difference:
Add a $30 donation when you book your stay, visit our front desk, or give online. Each tree supports long-term restoration and biodiversity. Donate today at the link in our bio.

Together, we can protect what makes Maui... Maui.

Trip Highlight:: #Maui part 2 🌺

Another look into our trip in Maui with @tourismcares and @hvcb ...

— We were treated like royalty at our home away from home, @thewestinmaui !
— @sheratonmaui was an incredible host for the @tourismcares forum where we met impact partners all over Hawaii (looking at you, @leilanifarmsanctuary @imumeaai @gofarmhawaii @mauiculturallands @sailtrilogy and more!)
— We came, saw and conquered at the @grandwailea and @ritzcarltonkapalua
— We experienced a working pineapple farm at none other, @mauigoldpineapple (Yes, I did carry a pineapple back as my carry on).
— We had an incredible evening at the @oldlahainaluau , the most authentic luau in Maui!
— We toured the @mauioceancenter and learned how they are protecting Hawai‘i’s remarkable marine life. P.S. Did you know they care for one of the world’s largest collections of live Pacific corals?
— We ate chocolate! And toured @mauichocolate 20-acre cacao farm and their hands-on fruit harvesting techniques.
— @sailtrilogy took us on a sail up and down the Ka’anapali where we chased the sunset (and saw whales 🐋!)
— Last but not least, we made our mark. We met with the @skylinehawaii @skylineconservation team where we helped plant trees in an area that they are working to restore 100% native ecosystem to the area of Pōhakuokalā.

Here are two important takeaways that will help you be a responsible traveler on your next visit to this magical island:
⭐Do your research before visiting (ahem, confide in someone like us, or local partners). Support organizations that support Hawaiian culture and give back to communities.
⭐Treat Maui (and anywhere you go) as you would your own home. Leave it better than you found it. In Hawaiian, this is called malama.

Keep an eye out in your inboxes for a more in-depth recap of this breathtaking & impactful trip (+ other travel highlights for some daydreaming fuel).

Mahalo to @tourismcares and @hvcb for the incredible opportunity, and for the new friends we crossed paths with along the way!

Recently, we had the privilege of planting native vegetation alongside our friends at @skylinehawaii. Together, we are both proud members of @1percentftp. Our team, from guides to management to owners, shares a deep passion for preserving this beautiful island we all love.

As we planted new life, we were reminded of the saying: "The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is today." 🌳 We witnessed both — planting fresh keiki ferns and grass and seeing the incredible growth of trees Skyline planted >20 years ago on this very land. 🌎💚

It was a fantastic experience contributing to the restoration of this special area, and we are committed to continuing our support for the island’s natural beauty.

Had the chance to give back to Maui’s land in such a meaningful way 🥰

@chloe.chapdelaine and I planted 4 native trees on the beautiful slopes of Haleakalā, helping restore vital ecosystems that have been impacted over time.

FUN FACT - I named one of the trees we planted “Keala” without knowing that in Hawaiian it means “the path” or “the way” which feels so fitting for this experience! 🎋

It’s incredible to see initiatives like this dedicated to protecting and preserving Hawai‘i’s natural beauty.

MAHALO to the @fairmontkealani team and @skylineconservation for making this experience possible!!🤍🌺

Mahalo to our wonderful volunteers for putting in three hours of epic seed collection efforts at Pōhakuokalā Community Forest Restoration Project at @skylinehawaii in support of the #KulaFireRestorationProject.

Mahalo to @skylineconservation for hosting us!

Stay tuned for more opportunities to take part in the renewal of the burned lands of Kula.
