I’m finally starting my dirtbag cooking show. Called “One Pan Wonders,” I’ll teach you how to eat delicious meals that feed 15 hungry vehicle-dwelling dirtbags for under $20.

I’m joking, (sadly). I did however upgrade my car camping situation substantially with this dope grill called a King Disc from @rticoutdoors. It’s basically a giant cast iron that you can heat up on a propane flame, which is big enough to feed the masses! I can’t wait till the ‘Rona is a thing of the past and I can invite fellow campers to wander over to my shiny red grill for Taco Night.

This grill brings back a fond memory of dumpster diving near Joshua Tree back in my truest dirtbag days. TJ’s was our hot spot, but when we arrived they were restocking, and after waiting a couple hours in the frigid car we went and asked an employee if they could look the other way while we shimmied into their trash can and loaded up on newly expired wraps, damaged coffee tins and only slightly wilted produce. They said Hell No. Being in a strip mall, we took turns investigating the dumpsters of chain restaurants and other shops nearby. I was waiting in my old civic for all my dirtbag passengers to finally load up, when across the parking lot comes the jogging silhouette of @slack_it_up the ear flaps of his lumberjack cap bouncing as he came flying back to the car. He had some large, round thing, like a baby UFO, and as he jumped into the backseat we all shone our headlamps at a glorious score: a GIANT Wok from Panda Express. We made sure to cook every damn meal on that Wok, inviting other dirtbags to throw in some veggies and share a dinner (last photo). Our campsite became “that one with the Wok,” and we regarded our cook-wear so dearly that we named our newly established highline “Between a Wok and Hard Place.”

The King Disc feels like the Wok reincarnated; shiny, red and just as functional, returned to my life so that when the pandemic is over I can be a beacon of comradery, like the “stone soup” of campsites where everyone contributes an ingredient and we eat a damn good meal together. I miss that, I really do.
