This episode is a special one 💜

In the finale to our Genetics of Reproduction series, we turn the mic on our host Janina Jeff Ringo @djaysquared to share her own birth story and why her choice to have a home birth with a Black midwife in her home state of Louisiana was a journey in itself.

We also talk with birth equity researcher Monica McLemore, RN, MPH, PhD @mclemoremr about the realities of giving birth while Black, and dig into why the number of Black midwives is so low with birth advocate and nurse midwife Nicole Deggins CNM, MSN, MPH @sistamidwife.

When In Those Genes host Janina Jeff Ringo learned she was pregnant with her first child, she knew almost immediately she wanted a home birth with a Black midwife. What she didn't know was how hard that would be to find.

In the final episode of our Genetics of Reproduction series, your favorite neighborhood Geneti-SIS @djaysquared shares her own birthing journey and what ultimately led to her decision to give birth at home.

We also talk with nurse midwife and birth advocate Nicole Deggins, CNM, MSN, MPH @sistamidwife about why birthing moved from the home to the hospital in the first place, and with birth equity researcher Monica R. McLemore, RN, MPH, PhD @mclemoremr about the realities of birthing while Black and what a birthing "Green Book" needs to include.

Our team put a lot of love and care into this one 💜 Link in bio to listen!

Maybe it's your mama. Your auntie. Your granny. Your bestie...or even *you*. Chances are, you know someone with fibroids. And that's not a coincidence.

But does genetics play a role?

In episode 2 of our Genetics of Reproduction series, we break down the current research on fibroids to help understand why they disproportionately impact Black women with board-certified OB/GYN Dr.Veronica Gillispie-Bell @drveronicawomenshealth. Dr. Sarah-Ann Anderson-Burnett @drsarahannab helps us understand what happens in the body for those who suffer with painful periods.

And we discuss how perimenopause – the pregame to menopause – can sometimes be freeing for Black menstruating people who experience painful periods with writer Veena Moore and @omisadeburneyscott, creator of the @blackgirlsguidetomenopause podcast, invites us to see the beauty of menopause and imagine a world where people experiencing it are given the resources to navigate this transition.

For as long as Vena Moore can remember, she’s had painful periods.

It started in fifth grade – earlier than most. Years later, she learned why: fibroids growing in her uterus.

So when Vena entered perimenopause in her late 30s, she found the change freeing and firmly embraced it.

In the next episode of our Genetics of Reproduction series, we dive into the science behind why Black people tend to start puberty earlier than others with pediatrician Dr. Sarah-Ann Anderson-Burnett @drsarahannab, discuss what scientists know about the genetic and environmental factors behind fibroids with board-certified OBGYN Dr. Veronica Gillispie-Bell @drveronicawomenshealth, and hear from Omisade Burney-Scott @omisadeburneyscott, founder of the @blackgirlsguidetomenopause, about how we can normalize menopause and support the people going through it.

Last stop !! Ever wonder how birth control actually works? It puts the GnRH train on hold — synthetic hormones send a “service held” signal, and the line pauses. That’s the science behind a paused period.
The full episode on the genetics of reproduction is out now with @drsarahannab & @mclemoremr

Every train needs a crew! Meet the genes running the puberty line: KISS1, the conductor who keeps it on time, and ESR1, the dispatcher routing the estrogen signal. When they run late, so does puberty.
Catch the full ride in our latest episode with @drsarahannab & @mclemoremr Link in bio.

Start with the GnRH express.

Y’all know we love a good science 🧬 analogy! So we broke down puberty as the NYC subway system because the are both a bit chaotic and hardly ever on schedule.

Meet the GnRH express: the train that carries puberty from your brain all the way to the gonads.
New episode with @drsarahannab and @mclemoremr out now. Link in bio.

Arrows Fitz @arrowsfitz was relieved when he got the call from his doctor. The years of symptoms – cystic acne, facial hair, irregular periods – finally had a name. Polycystic Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS, formerly referred to as PCOS).

In the first episode of our Genetics of Reproduction series, we dive into the science behind puberty and the role genetics plays in PMOS, which is more prevalent and often goes undiagnosed in Black folks.

We also explore what reproductive health care looks like from a gender-expansive lens with Sarah-Ann Anderson-Burnett, MD @drsarahannab and Monica R. McLemore,RN, MPH, PhD @mclemoremr, and debunk the myth that turning 35 automatically closes the door to pregnancy.

The first episode of our Genetics of Reproduction series drops TODAY! ✨✨

To kick off the series, we dive into the science behind puberty, following @arrowsfitz journey from puberty into adulthood and the years of symptoms that ultimately led to him being diagnosed with Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (formerly Polycystic Ovary Syndrome/PCOS).

We break down why puberty is a lot like the New York City subway system: kind of messy and hardly ever on schedule. And dig into the role genetics plays in PMOS, the unanswered scientific questions about PMOS in Black communities, and why turning 35 doesn't automatically close the door to pregnancy with Sarah-Ann Anderson-Burnett, MD @drsarahannab and Monica R. McLemore,RN, MPH, PhD @mclemoremr.
